I built a B&O dome coach a couple of weeks ago and haven't had a chance to post photos of it.

The prototype was a Pullman Standard car delivered in 1949 for the Columbian.

This is an old Rowa car with the correct dome profile and the correct windows for the prototype car.  The biggest issue with it is the is should be smooth side rather than having fluting below the windows....I figured I could live with it after it was painted.

I disassembled the car and cleaned up the casting.  Added larger car name letterboards below the windows for the new car name.  Added Micro Trains trucks, Fox Valley Models metal wheels, Micro Trains body mounted 1015 couplers.

Paint is Modelflex.  Decals are by Microscale.

While this car didn't run with my "National Limited" it looks good with the consist and I may sneak it in once in a while.

Not a bad result from $20.00 car I bought on Ebay.

I thought about that before beginning the project.......

You would lose all the grab iron detail and the detail on the skirting. 

The grab irons could be replaced easily; not so much with the molded on detail on the skirting.

Maybe I'll pick up another one and try that just to see what it comes out like.

Water in the canal and scenery on the banks. I couldn’t find any photos from my time frame to verify the water level of the canal but I’m really happy with the scene so no one prove me wrong please

Who cares if they do, the scene looks fantastic especially the see through water and rocks at the bottom and the clumps of grass right at the edge.
 It is a beautiful scene.

I am settling into my retirement routine with a walk and a swim every day, some practice on my instruments, and hopefully some modelling.

My M-420 carbodies are now in the paint shop and work is under way to sort out the drives for them.

I recently acquired two specific vehicles for my Marine Drive diorama:  a 1964 Volvo Amazon and a 1974 four-door Maverick.  These have now been painted:




I also need a 1970s Honda Civic hatchback and found one online last week so have that coming to me.


I am still working on getting the caboose parts to fit together, but with trucks, wheels and coupler installed it was possible to take them for a test run.  At this point they are just dry-fitted together and lack any weight, but they went from Chetwynd to Dawson Creek and back with no issues.  The two new cabooses are the current 3D printed iteration of the kit; the finished caboose at the rear is from the flat cast resin kit which I completed almost thirty years ago now:






I also hosted a modelling night for NSMR members this past week, and started work on a handlaid turnout and crossover.  The paper templates are from my friend Philippe and the PCB ties are from Fast Tracks.  These will be two out of three scratchbuilt track projects for my NMRA Civil Certificate one day:

Nice work on the dome car Nate, I know how hard it is to get passenger car striping straight.

As for water level under the bridge, wouldn’t it change seasonally? I’d ignore the comments, treat them like it’s just water under the bridge …

Nice head on Snoot Shot Bruce, that’s a knee on the ground rail fan shot one we don’t see too often in Model photography.

And Tim, it’s great to see you posting regularly again. Happy retirement and I’m looking forward to seeing the progress on your Marine Drive diorama.

Those old Rowa cars were so far ahead of their competitors back in the day, and they still look good to this day.

Glyndon station is largely finished as this point.  Installed cupola, ridge caps and used Krystal Klear for window glass this evening.  Installed the railing in front of stairs as well.  Just don't look around back.  Still need brick and timber supports for the overhang back there.  Big round of applause is due for @John for doing all the hard work with the 3d drawings.

I agree on the quality of Rowa cars, and there's another nice thing about them.  If you want lights, it's easy to fit Kato trucks to them.  You need a 1/8 inch diameter mounting post, Evergreen tubing works fine, and to cut holes  in the floor for the pickup tabs.

I didn't want lights, but wanted truck-mounted couplers, to go with my Kato and Railsmith cars.  So I cut the pickup tabs off, and didn't need the new holes.

It doesn't show in Nate's pictures, but the coach and sleeper, at least, have THREE floors.  There's the interior, the red piece in his picture; the underbody detail, the dark gray piece; and the actual floor, which is part of the body.

To mount the trucks, remove the interior casting.  On the top of the floor, there's a metal weight, with clear space over each truck mounting hole.  Cut a piece of styrene sheet, no thicker than the weight, to fit that area.  It doesn't have to be pretty!  Drill a 1/8 inch hole in the sheet, and glue a piece of tubing in it, making sure it goes in straight.  When dry, trim the top flush with the sheet, and glue that, centered, in the mounting hole.  Trim the bottom so that the Kato screw will hold the truck without binding.

You may have to trim the ends of the underbody detail piece to allow the couplers to move on curves.  Some of my cars needed that, some didn't, depending on what had warped over the years, and how much!

If, like me, you like to be really sure that things are centered, you can cut a piece of 5/32 inch brass or aluminum tubing to go over the truck mounting tube.  Cut it just long enough to fill the hole in the floor, so that it doesn't affect the truck, and slide it on.  That will guarantee that the tube is centered in the mounting hole.

I assume these new cabooses are in current production and can be ordered from the Kaslo shops website?.   I built two of the old flat cast ones and while they came out OK, I do not consider them some of my best work   I'd like to try then new kits and see if I can do a better job

Hi Andy!

Yes, the current kits were completely re-done as 3D printed bodies with printed and etched details, and they are available from Kaslo Shops at their website.  This is what you get:




The biggest advantage of the new kit is not having to scratchbuild the curved side grab irons or the end handrails, but there are some other upgrades as well.  You just need to add trucks, wheels and couplers.  The instructions specify #1021s but I have found those difficult to assemble and unreliable in operation.  They also came out low as on the original resin kit so I am using #2004s which are working very well.  For hte trucks and wheels I am using Atlas caboose trucks and Fox Valley wheels.
