Weekend Update 6/30/24

Yup, agreed.  It's a 2;65" wheelbase, and there is about .020" lateral play in the GG-1 axles which I believe will be duplicated here, so it should be okay.  Once I have the outer truck frame designed later this summer, it will be possible to confirm whether or not it will work.  If it doesn't, I will have to cheat and hinge the pilot section of the frame as I did with the EP-3 and EP-4.

While visiting my brother in Roselle, IL and my son and his family in Park Ridge, we made a stop on the way home at Lombard Hobbies.  In my 54 years in N scale I have never seen so much N scale in a single brick and mortar shop. I spent only about a half hour since my wife and granddaughter were waiting in the air conditioned car on a VERY hot day.

The display cases were stocked with all of the new Scale Trains locos with a display model on top and stacked 8-10 deep below.  All of the new IM and Kato offerings were equally well stocked. Unfortunately, all too new for me.  I did pick up a Trainworx Mobilgas tanker semi.  All of the items seemed to be discounted 20-25%.

My son lives close to Des Plaines Hobbies which we visited last trip which was also deeply stocked with N scale but the prices didn't appear as generous as Lombard.

Looking forward to the next trip.  We also enjoyed a great family dinner at a German restaurant in Harwood Heights.  Returned home to have a new Pacemaker installed after getting 12 years on the last battery.  Worst part is no shower for ten days.

I scratchbuilt this structure based on the Campbell Scale Models "DeWitt's Depository," a structure I've always wanted.

The model deviates from the original in some respects - I extended the 1 story section and omitted the addition on that side, the original
had clapboard siding but I use Northeastern scale lumber scribed siding, and I used a tarpaper roof rather than corrugated sheets.

I had a set of plans to work from for the basic dimensions. Materials used are basswood, styrene, & cardboard.
The windows I had in my parts box, I no longer remember what kit they came from. The dock door is from a Walthers
grain storage shed. The original had a stone foundation, I didn't have any stone or brick sheet and I was too impatient to order
some, so I built up the foundation from cardboard and used Evergreen 0.05" spaced scribed siding as wainscotting.
The attic vents were made from BTS (Better Than Scratch) shutters I had a sheet of, cut in half.
The tarpaper roof strips were cut from Avery laser printer label paper. Need to find a chimney still.

Here's how I've spent my Saturday.  All the talk a few weeks back about B&O's Cincinnatian reminded me to get going on designing my own as my brass set isn't a runner.  Here's the 60-seat coach.



As you might spot if you look closely, I'm designing the cars both with and without diaphragms and with and without skirting.

What a wealth of detail! Any tips on bending/attaching the brass wire for the piping (above drivers 1 & 2) coming off the air compressor?

Take your time! I took a full length strand of .008 wire and bent it into a U. I threaded it into the middle two holes of all three pipe hangers and pushed them up against the bend. This will allow you measure and make the final two bends, and thread them through the outer holes of the hangers with as little creasing as possible. Then you can cut off the excess. Then I go back and CA the pipe hangers in place and work out any remaining waviness with an exacto knife. It was tedious, and a lot of the reason I took so long to finish.

@Dwight in Toronto - the hangers are etchings by @mmagliaro. I bough two sheets off of him several years ago when he was working on his SP&S pacific. I treasure them and have them earmarked for my remaining WM steam projects. I’d love to have a few spares just in case. Maybe we can get enough people together to get him to make another batch!

It's summer time, so lots of distractions, like golf, so work on the Grand Trunk Southern has slowed down.  With the success of the grout for roadways however, I decided to address an area that I wasn't happy with.  It was just open hillside.  As you can see I carved out the existing scenery, installed a roadbed on which a roadway will be laid and have reached the stage of putting the hardshell back in.  Plan is to get the hillsides done before installing the grout roadway to avoid glue overspray etc.  Have a golf game today but will be posting more on the Grand Trunk Southern thread tonight or tomorrow.



I just realized after I posted this photo that the tree at the start of the bridge is from the hillside I took out and it is just resting there for lack of a better place to put it.  I actually like it.  Looks like I need to plant it there, straightened up of course.

I finished up the other two coach styles late last night.  They didn't take long as they are all almost identical except for the women's restroom areas.

I just realized after I posted this photo that the tree at the start of the bridge is from the hillside I took out and it is just resting there for lack of a better place to put it.  I actually like it.  Looks like I need to plant it there, straightened up of course.

Why straight ?  Looks "natural" the way it is.
