I’d save my kitbashed Nickel Plate Road Hudson #175. It’s far from perfect detail wise, but the nicely running Model Power mechanism would propel a local freight or passenger train equally well. Plus in the new world, I can eliminate all those other modeling distractions and finally get the trailing truck to sit properly on the tracks.

@btrain - did you ever do a build-thread on that?

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

@jargonlet Absolutely shocked you didn't pick something Erie or PRR. Hahaha.

Normally yes but all of those are easily replaced compared to the amount of work I put in that kitbash.

Probably RGS 25... Besides being a rare can-motor equipped second run PSC, it was my father's. He gave it to me and I had it equipped with DCC, sound, and a keep-alive as well as painted and weathered. It was appraised--after upgrade--by Narrow Gauge Colorado at $1200.

But the sentimental value is more important. My PSC RGS #20 (from the same run) is probably worth the same amount of money, but I picked it up at a train show two years ago and it has no real story.

My father is the one who got me into the RGS. I read his copy of Mallory Hope Ferrell's Silver San Juan until it was tattered. We always talked about building an RGS layout together, but life got in the way. Then college, the Air Force, and a lifetime living hundreds of miles from my dad. My RGS First District layout is essentially the layout we'd envisioned.

His memory is failing now and sometime's he's disoriented. Talking to him isn't as easy as it used to be. But he always asks about the layout, and every time we discuss it he speaks glowingly of the trip I took him on in 2018 to trace the Rio Grande Southern grade, when his physical and mental strength were significantly better.

Only fitting then that this engine he purchased in the mid-1980s at Willis Hobbies in East Williston, NY should be the one that comes with me when all else fails.

:scared: I would grab my BN Atlas SD-9.  Watching the real things work in the 1970s always fascinated me, and the latest Atlas product is the most realistic N scale one that I own.

Not a locomotive as such but it will move a few cars around so it counts.
I have several one off builds but this is likely my favorite.

Hard decision.  Hmmmm...probably my last-run Key oil-fired, pre-Worthington SA feedwater heater, pre-red Mars light, factory super-detailed FEF-2.

This engine probably won't ever be available in plastic and may never again be made in N-scale brass...and is PERFECT for an FEF-2 that's been freshly shopped in 1952/1953 and painted in the last all-black scheme...

And, it runs like a Swiss watch.

Cheerio!

Too many special locos to pick from. I would likely perish while trying to make a decision !

This kitbashed B&O T-3.  Not perfect in any sense, but a fine puller, good looker and a great runner.
