Scaletrains Sound C39-8's on Sale....a LOT!

I don't know how I came across this (I thought I got an email but now don't see it), but sound equipped N scale NS & CR C39-8's are on sale at Scaletrains for only $9 more than a DCC-ready version. Been eying thee for a while, as I love the beefy look of these, but I don't model NS or CR. But, for that price, I can justify one for run-thru power! ;)

Oh, I doubt it. The CR gods may smite me for saying this, but the C39-8 was pretty niche in the first place and I'll wager that many if not most retailers didn't stock-up. If ST has set the bar that low, they evidently need to clear things out because of poor sales, including sales to retailers.

I bought one from the original run because I thought it was a cool engine. I was pretty surprised that they did a second run due to its uniqueness.

I'm sure the fine folks at YankeeDabbler and Lombard Hobbies would beg to differ, still listing theirs at $254 and change.  Is what it is, nothing from ST in my collection anyways.  I'd like to see them go direct only like ExactRail did so they wouldn't use their retailers for exposure

one of the Conrails maybe of interest. Seemed CR sent some oddballs out west on pool/run through trains

Conrail actually used theirs as "horsepower hour payback fodder" for a good portion of their early careers, so you'll be well served.

I have a photo of one of the CR units on a CN freight in Edmonton, Alberta in mid-1990s.

I didn't really need one, but what the heck, that's super cheap for DCC/Sound.

They would also sometimes appear in branchline service where the HP was needed but they didn't want to divert the good stuff from Mainline use. So a few spent a good amount of time around Southern NJ and Ops similar to that.

Any chance the mech/tank/trucks would work with a Kato C30-7 shell?   I know the proto is a different overall length, but that doesn't necessarily answer the question.  If the wheelbase and other dimensions matched up, it seems like it might be a possibility?
