Cannot access Kato N Scale GS-4 Install
« on: May 19, 2024, 04:42:59 PM »
Hi, Guys

I'm trying to open the Kato N Scale GS-4 Install under DCC - No Sound in the How To: Decoder Installs in DCC / Electronics board. It links back to the General Discussions page with no link to the actual file. All other Installation How To are working correctly. How can I access that file?

Thanks

What you mean by "cannot open file"?  Usually installs are threads on the forum with text and photos embedded in them.

Can you post a link to the thread you are asking about, or describe where you see the reference to it.

When I click the link for Kato N Scale GS-4, I get this:

https://www.therailwire.net/forum/

All other How T threads work fine.

Ah, I just figured out that you are looking at the DCC install index sticky thread.
Yes, the GS-4 link is mangled: http://therailwire.net/forum/index.php/topic,15096.0.html

This fixed link will work for you: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=15096.0

Maybe @Ian MacMillan or one of the other mods can fix it.

But keep in mind couple of things:
1. That thread is 13 years old. The decoder and speaker technology has advanced quite a bit since that time.

2. The early GS-4s had a design flaw which will blow up your decoder. The way the motor subframe was designed the rear driver could short the track voltage to the motor which would damage the decoder (despite of the built-in protections some manufacturers claim).  That would be a $100 mistake!  Once the problem was discovered, Kato offered a spacer set to be slipped between the driver and the frame to prevent shorts.  The subsequent runs of the model had a redesigned frame which did not have that problem or require the spacer.

If you have a model  from the initial run and it does not have the spacer installed, I would be leery of installing the decoder. I don't know if Kato still has those  spacers available.

Thanks, Guys!

Peteski: I realize it's on old thread but I will give me an idea of how to approach this using newer technology.
