Quetions about Pallets

I need some N scale pallets. 

Does anyone make/sell these?

Is 40 x 48 a standard size?

Is there such a thing as a standard size ?

 I am considering make a few out of wood scraps, but looking for less time consuming options.

  Yes 40 x 48 is 1 of the standard sizes . 30 x 36 is another and I see 40 x 96 fairly regulary . I'm sure theirs others too .     Mike

ITLA, GC Laser, Atlas among others make them.  Some wood, some 3D printed, not to mention bunch of options on Shapeways or DIY printers at home.

I have a question as well - when did pallets become the standard way of shipping, say, bagged fertilizer? Would my circa 1958 farm supply warehouse receive its products on pallets?

I have a pile of them from the @DKS collection, but they're presently stuffed in a storage bin.
I might be able to dig them out if you're really in a pinch.  I think they're resin cast, but might be styrene from a kit.

And, there are also non-standard sizes.  We have one customer at our auto filter plant that wants there's on 44x44.  Why?  No idea, but they get mad if we don't have one, and have to use another size.

A lot of ours are 45x48.  Originally those were for 96 inch wide truck trailers.  Inside they were 92 or 93 inches, as the walls used to be more substantial than today's trailers.  Two 45 inch wide pallets would fit, with a couple inches for the forklift/pallet jack operator to maneuver.

Pallets and the forklifts to move them came out of WW2. I don’t know exactly how fast the changeover was for commercial use, but it’s certainly possible that they’d be using pallets by 1958.

There is an article in the NP's The Northwest, March '54, showing pallets laden with bags of sugar being loaded into a boxcar.

I worked for a farmer it the late 1950s into the 1960s that dealt in fertilizer in 50# bags and we got all of it stacked on the trailer floor without pallets in northern Illinois.
