Were those Penn Central cars used in revenue service?
Wondering if I can justify one "out west".
With the 5 digit number, my guess is the car had already been converted to company sand service.
Disclaimer: I don't actually know PC's practice on that, only that CR based their freight car numbering on PC's roster, and on Conrail, 5 digit freight cars were in Company service.
Related, the pictures I noticed of 5 digit PC H34Cs on RR picture archives are in company sand service. That specific 742xx number series on Conrail was a total catch-all of ancient 2-bays in company service.
[edited to add the note on where that number fell on Conrail]
