Why does Atlas seem to LOVE making SD35s?

I feel like Atlas is cranking out a steady stream of SD35 releases (they just announced another run) in N scale, and I'm trying to understand why.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't have a ton of love for them, but given the release schedule, maybe I'm in the minority.

I'm not being critical, just curious.

Are there any big time SD35 fans out there?

I have the pair of Chessie from their first run up to the Chessie with sound. I'm not a fan of their ride height but I have not had any issues with them from what I remember. Speaking of which, it is probably time I unboxed those earlier units and ran them some. I'm sure they'll need to TLC.

Probably catch a good amount of popular schemes withought being foobs. Remember theres a good amount of people in the hobby that will just pick up a six axle of their favored road even withought much thought into the exact type of locomotive.

I actually now need to buy a couple of I’m going to amass an Interstate roster; need these, GP38s, GP7s and F units in Southern and a couple Interstate RS3’s to cover most of my interest period

Although the SD-35s didn't work the coal branches. Bet you already knew that, though. :)

It's one of their few models that features both low/high hood and cab/nose headlight versions, allowing for a large variety of roadnames and paint schemes compared to other Atlas engines.

I bought a pair each of the JC and PRR models when they were first released, a quarter century ago, because I could remember seeing the prototype units in operation.
I also bought another pair each of the JC and PRR locos, several years later, when Atlas re-released them with new/different roadnumbers.
However, that's enough for me.

I'm still waiting for Atlas to produce the Alco RSD-15 model that Cory said they would be making (before he left the company).

Dream on. That was years ago. BLI has that franchise now, and it's not a bad model at all once you get rid of their decoder. Handsome locomotive, but too quirky/niche to deserve attention from more than one maker.

I'm more than good with an SD35 re-run. I traded mine out for an SDP35 3D printer project, and discovered the other one I thought I had was just an undec shell. I'll pick up a couple in SP to run together with the upcoming SD40T-2s from ScaleTrains and the "soon" SD45s from Atlas... just like they did in the '70s over Tehachapi. Seems like it's a good time to be a classic-period SP modeler in N.

This is Atlas' only second generation six axle locomotive isn't it? I bet that's why they crank out so many, relatively, of these. The SD45s may dilute things once they arrive, we will have to see.

Yeah.  Five of them.  Two different pai t jobs, so 10 at the most if you model a particular week in 1970.  (Monday and Tuesday they were black,  and by Friday they were all RWB)

Atlas has done both schemes and four of the numbers, plus an unnumbered RWB.  Since you now have my stone traIn, you'll need at least three. :D
