Loksound 5 Sound File S0573 for the F59PHI

I've noticed thru videos of proto F59PHI's that, unlike some other locos, the prime mover still comes down to a low idle even while in HEP mode, but you can hear what is apparently a secondary motor/generator for the HEP. ESU confirms this in the description for the above sound file as follows....

To supply electrical power for passenger service, the F59PHI is equipped with a secondary electrical generator referred to as the Head End Power (HEP) unit. The head-end generator generates AC power at 480 V, 60 Hz AC, and can be rated between 500 and 750 kW (670 and 1,010 hp) to provide power to the passenger carriages for lighting, electric heating, and air conditioning. The head-end generator is powered by a second diesel engine dedicated to it. With this arrangement, the prime mover is not burdened by head-end power generation and consequently is used solely for supplying tractive effort.

Yet when you activate HEP in this file, there's no secondary HEP moto/generator and the prime mover goes to notch 8 like with other locos. Curious that they would acknowledge the separate generator but not create one in the sound file. :?

After some research, it looks like the HEP generator in the F59PHI is a CAT 3412 which, after some serious snooping, happens to be the prime mover in European sound file S0273 (the sound sample sounds perfect!).

Hmmm. Now to figure out how to get it installed in the F59PHI so that it will run at a high RPM separate from notch selection. Basically, this CAT motor would need to run at HEP speeds instead of the prime mover. All this while not going over the max size of the sound file. Tim? ;)

Update: The CAT 3412 will indeed fit in the sound file if I delete some of the unused horns.

Okay, so I've finally had enough free time to experiment with adding a separate CAT 3412 HEP to the S0573 sound file.

First I removed the stock HEP Notching and Manual Notching from the EMD prime mover in order to free up Shift modes 2 and 3.

Then I imported and hacked up the CAT 3412 prime mover from the ESU S0273 sound file. I've simplified this to ignore speed and run at idle based on F26, notch up to D6 with F27 (HEP active mode), and notch down to D4 (HEP standby mode) with F28 and not F27.

Please find this available for download here:

I've also customised the horn pack, and made some basic adjustments to the sound levels for the prime mover, HEP, horn, bell, and tone control, but the rest of the file is unmodified and will obviously need some tuning.

Hope this works for you!
