Suggestions for loads on 89 foot flat cars

In a raffle, I won two of these MicroTrains 89' flat cars.

I need some suggestions for current day loads that would be appropriate. I am not looking for anything military-related.

In addition to your suggestions, I'd also like to know where I could purchase those items.

NS shipped some locomotive frames on 89' flats a few years ago. A bit out of the ordinary, but definitely unique.



I built one using an Atlas SD50, or 60, frame, wood strips for the cribbing and some chain to tie it down.

I’ve seen power (“telephone”) poles, stacked in a staggered fashion so the tapers sort of cancelled each other out. Probably easy to model since they’d be held down with just chains and would not necessarily need saddles like pipe loads would.

These FTTX cars, at least in relation to the MTL release, are meant specifically for auto/truck frame loading. Frame loads were offered separately by MTL with the release of that 2-pack. That part number was 499 45 962 & 963. The cars were specially equipped with chains and racks that stayed with the car when empty. That was their intended purpose by TTX, anyway. There may have been other uses in more recent years.

That's awesome!   In that vein, one could also add a load with some prime movers, or perhaps even do a loco that has been wrecked.

Long lengths of rebar are shipped on these.  Smaller quantities, lots of blocking, long lengths. (high density, high weight per piece, low volume.)

🤦‍♂️ FTTX cars, as offered by MTL and pictured by the OP, are for auto and truck frame loading, period. Reporting marks matter. These other loads are neat but you need JTTX, PTTX or other versions. BLMA/Atlas has you covered there. Pipe flats, equipment flats and whatnot are going to be equipped with loading devices for their respective service. But, whatever… the Microscale TTX sheet has alternate reporting marks with their various uses listed if you’re so inclined.

Railroad rails?  Note it's a different style of car, but still FTTX.


A random search of the FTTX listings showed several styles of flatcar, but other than this one, the couple dozen I looked at were all carrying vehicle frames or empty racks for vehicle frames.
