UP CH-70-1 ACF? covered hoppers

I recently purchased an 8-car set of Kato N scale ACF 2-bay covered hoppers, to repaint.

I could use the UP cars as interchange cars, but so far haven't been able to find any information on them.  They are stenciled CH-70-1, numbered 210 and 409. 

Are these prototypical, and were they still in service in 1974?

I found a few close, but I could not tell you about the roof hatches, most look round on the proto.

I'd say they were real cars the UP had, but the lettering and numbers are wrong.

The Kato hoppers are a fairly accurate representation of a CH-70-2 covered hopper built by GATC (the CH-70-1 was an earlier version with the triangular side cutouts)

Terry Metcalfe's Union Pacific Freight Cars 1936-51 has decent builders photos (in the original scheme done by Kato)

400 cars built 1949 originally numbered in the 101-499 series.
Renumbered in 1960 to 10101-10499

a good number of CH-70-1 and 2 hoppers were rebuilt into CH-90 class cars but some survived, My January 1973 ORER shows 121 cars still in service in the 10101-10999 series (note the extra numbers, combined series with a later order maybe?)

As for the Kato scheme lasting into the 1970s, I cant find any evidence of that. the later scheme shared by @nscaler711 would be more plausible by that era. I would be excited to find a photo tho.

The first two posted by nscaler look like PS-2s, such as Atlas and MT make.  The second pair are very close to the Kato cars, but judging by the 90 series numbers, are in company service.

Also look in the 900###s for UP Covered hoppers, it looks like they were transferred to company sand service in the early/mid 1970s..

you should definitely do 903891 that car looks funny with the Unio above Union Pacific.

I would, but since I model the BN in central Montana, with no online connection to the UP, UP company service cars wouldn't be seen!

For the sake of future reference, the November 1993 issue of Mainline Modeller has an article about the CH-70-2 covered hoppers (Thornton Waite - page 59)
It has a number of decent photos of the cars in Sand Service and some good history/roster information, the article also includes drawings and builders photos.

That's what I'd do on the two UP cars, cut in the triangular side openings and get some variety in the fleet.

I'm going to have to cut the openings for any GN cars, so it's a possibility.  If I do, I'll keep the stock lettering.  No point buying decals, since I really don't need the UP cars.  My cement would come for a plant southeast of Helena, which is served by either NP or MILW, maybe both, but not the UP.

That CB&Q car also look interesting.  In my case, I need them for cement, but a BN sand car wouldn't be out of place.  Looks like I might have to buy more cars.
