Started finishing some structures for the LIRR IS and tested a white Indian Ink mortar in the bricks. These are Walthers parklane towers.

This one was kitbashed for some two bedroom apartments on the right side of the entry.

This one is normal.

Here they will be magnetized to the layout. Maybe some lighting later.

While on a trip to Ireland I visited a model railroad museum in Malahied.  these are scratch built out of nothing, whatever he could find to fit the bill. impressive.

I found some decals from an outfit called Circus City Decals that I’m not familiar with, so I’m going to attempt to turn the HO scale model of the Dodge Charger shown in this first picture into the General Lee of The Dukes of Hazzard fame.  This is an Oxford Diecast model.

I spent a few hours earlier today scrubbing the factory paint off in a 91% isopropyl alcohol bath and repainting the base colors of the model: Tamiya Deck Tan for the interior and Tamiya Orange for the exterior.  Since this model is incorrectly a 1968 Charger (the General Lee on the TV show was a ‘69 model), I’ll justify it as if one of the local North Carolinians on my layout is a huge Dukes fan and DIYed his ‘68 Charger.  That’ll be very plausible (and explains the wrong model year, wheels, etc.) when I’m running a late-1970s or 1980s era on my layout. 😀

Progress to date:

Decal and detail paint work to come.  I’m letting the paint cure for a good day or two first.  I’m excited by this, because I’ve wanted an HO scale model of the General for decades.  The crappy 1:64 Ertl model from the 1980s doesn’t cut it, and the HO scale slot car is a non-starter, too. (By the way, I wouldn’t mind an HO scale model of KITT, either.)

I cleared some stuff off the workbench this week, and made some progress backdating a pair of PRR PS-2 hoppers.  First, some body work to carve off the late ribs, and add early channel-style ribs from Evergreen styrene - they are a little chunky but should look the part when painted:

Now, ready for paint; the Gold Medal roofwalks are a tiny bit short, but you have to look really close!  I used some .015 styrene strip to make the loading placards on these Pennsy cars:

Idler flatcars, also called "handles" or "reachers"...............   Railroads use them on car ferries or to spot cars inside buildings.  Often, the locomotive can not go onto the ferry, so it pushes idler cars that push the freight cars onto the ferry.  You do not want  locomotive inside  building because of fumes.   If you have idler flatcars, the locomotive remains outside the building and the fumes dissipate into the air.  AS crew will rideon these cars, the railroads put handrailings onto them so that the brakemen could hold onto something while the cars moved.

My pike needs handles so that the switchers can push cars into buildings.  I made these from B-mann nineteenth century flat cars and some end railing parts from some kind of IM freight cars.  This FeePay seller ws selling IM FT shells and some other parts, all in one package.  I bought the package for the FT shells but ended up finding a use for the end railing parts, as well.  Those parts are on these handles and replaced some clunky handrailings on some other cars as well.

I had the things all put together when I realised that they were missing truss rods. I cut some bearing blocks from Evergreen Styrene pieces.  The rods are made from the wires used for bread closers.  I stripped off the flat paper and was left with the wire.  I made the turnbuckles from pieces of insulation stripped from wire then slid onto the bread closer wire..

Restored a couple of Trix F units to operational.

And continued the effort to revive the Rivarossi Berkshire,  still with no luck

I may give that one up for dead, which flies in the face of my usual tenacity for such projects.

“Watch out, Bo!”

🤣🤣🤣  Oh, I’m not even close to being finished with the decaling and detail paintwork, but I couldn’t resist.

More weathering adventures, and misadventures.

Removed the splotchy white Dullcoat frosting, added rust spots and general grime.

I also experimented on the roof. Orangish spots are were the last rust wash hit the white patching coat. I'll touch those up.

UP hopper for rust practice using a sponge. I masked the ribs on one side to keep them clean, but the other side I simply used a micro brush and q-tip to remove the wash from where I did not want it.

Atlas GP15-1 with panel line wash applied. Prepped now to fade the paint for the splotchy appearance of the prototype.

Finally a Deluxx OOCL container for practicing fades with zinc white and a touch of rust.

I've been working on the weird Deco ends that the C&O had on 100 of their 1937 AAR boxcars. It needs some revisions, the rivets didn't show up for one thing, but it looks the part. Got a first pass at the Creco doors as well, just need the Viking roof.

Spiffy!  I'm so disappointed that Intermountain cancelled their model of these.

Remember Robbman saying something about scale rivets being almost invisible in N. So he deigned them oversized.

I'm thinking it may end up as a mini-kit if I can actually finish it. Ends, doors, and roof.
