Just because I made an early wood hopper in N scale.

It was used on the Pittsburgh, Youngstown & Ashtabula RR. I think there is one at Strasburg.

Printables won't let me upload the Chitubox file https://www.printables.com/model/609242-pya-hopper-n-scale

So yeah, these were originally PRR cars.

From my Dad's complaints, decals for them are surprisingly tough to come by. Everything is for the later circle keystone scheme cars.

Anyone know a source for the earlier PRR style lettering on these?

Yes
I used decals for Union Line cars from K4 Decals to letter my GB gons.  They are the only ones i’ve found.
I’d like to know if there are any other prints available.

Would this set have some of the lettering he would need?

I think this group of cars later became PRR. The original RR they are for once crossed the street I live on.

Later on I'll put them on Thingieverse along with the Chitubox supported model I used.

I guess the PY&A was a subsidiary of the PRR. They were built in 1895. Even though it was called a gondola it is said to be one of the first "hopper" cars.

Chitubox file should be here:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6259369

Also it was made with a slot to insert Microtrains stirrups.

Or the PY&A purchased them second hand from the PRR. According to the wiki, the PY&A was formed in 1906.

"Hopper-bottom" gondolas go back at least to 1881. N&W built one experimental car at that time. Between 1882 & 1883 N&W ordered and received 500 "hopper-bottom" cars from Bowers, Dure, & Co. for an avg cost of $530.50  :D They had a whopping 20 ton capacity.

Info above from Andrew Dow's N&W Coal Car book.

There is a photo from 1886 or 1887 in the book, but I was unable to find any pics online after 5 min of searching.
