 I am slowly working on my rock quarry, this is my first attempt a doing scenery.  Now comes the fun of ballasting the Kato track.

A quiet week here after last weekend's Vanrail ops extravaganza.  I undertook some drone photography with the aid of a friend to examine the possibility of background photos for my Marine Drive diorama:




After some experimentation we recorded a series of images at 125 feet for possible backdrop use.  At least I now have something to experiment with on the computer.  We also used the drone to estimate the height of some trees and power poles.


I also purchased and assembled a desk for my dispatchers to use during op sessions.  After a lot of searching I found one which met my requirements for fitting into the closet, maximizing the work space, and having drawers on the right side.  With Michael (Dayliner)'s assistance we lifted it into place today and it is now ready for my next op session in a few weeks:




The centre portion of the hutch will eventually house a digital fast clock and the future staging yard will extend over the top of the desk, so the dispatcher wont be far from the action.

I've mostly given up on using sanded grout for ballast, but perhaps this stuff (its' not grout) could be something of a "silk purse" approach....?  (esp. with a bit of weathering powder applied)





For reference, it is interesting to note how varied the prototype can appear at different times, lighting conditions, etc....

It's N Scale Weekend!  Lots of updates from Altoona coming up.



A nice visit to the Altoona Area Model RIlroad Club.  Really nice layout.





And a pleasant tour of the future bar in Cresson to gird our loins for a full day of N Scale adventure tomorrow!

Great compression on the quarry --- you have all the elements without it taking over
Maybe plant some brush/trees on the edge of the pit --- the edge is never maintained

Hey Everyone!
I'm still alive, and lurking here from time to time. It's been a busy wildland season, and summer for me.
Not a lot of new modeling to report. Worked on a few projects, and worked though a few ideas.
I also adopted a N-Trak corner module from my club, and have been slowly disassembling the scenery to re-build. Changing up the scene, and such. The trackwork is good, and pretty solid. Once I work out the last of the ideas, it should go pretty quick. Then it's going to be down to figuring out a way to transport both my 4' and this corner.

I'll try to get some kind of pictures for next weeks update.

Built another Wild West Scale Models kit for my new HOn30 layout project. The figure is a cast pewter figure from Knuckleduster. Painting those things even with primer is a pain.

     This summer I had very little time to work on my module. Whenever a few moments could be put to use on ‘train stuff’ I’ve sorted through my freight cars. First having narrowed my time frame to about 1955, any cars built after 1959 were put aside. Some evenings a little historical research could be done on various rolling stock.

 The cars that fit my era, were then checked for for compliance with standards. My standards are:
1. Knuckle couplers free moving, centered and the correct height. (prefer MTL but others if they play well are acceptable for now)
2. Trucks free pivoting.
3. Low profile wheel sets to NMRA guage. (Metal wheels prefered, but any free rolling wheel ok for now)
4. Cars weighted to NMRA weight -/+ 2gms
5. Car free rolling. 1% on less great, 1% to 1.75%, acceptable, 1.75 to 2% remedial, >2% fail.

Any defect was corrected.

Then car was photographed, and logged into my roster spreadsheet.

 This weekend this roster check was finished. Woo_Hoo

Next for the rolling stock is  appearance standards. This is a bit more subjective. Much of my fleet dates from the 70s and 80s. The photos will help give me a critical eye, as to what can be upgraded. This can wait until there is somewhere to run them.

Time to dust off the module and focus on completing it.

Agreed! When he said there was no room for the one I was like "bullshit!" and pulled one of mine out to make room for it.

They're seriously good stuff.

The only problem is that I've now had this song stuck in my head all weekend.
