Bringing the total to 5 ( half painted ) heritage units, CSX revealed the Chesapeake and Ohio unit Thursday afternoon

CN pass but need to do the balance of component roads
CP pass but need to do the balance of component roads
CSX conditional pass, 75% done
IAIS pass
NS pass
UP fail, did not understand the assignment

Techincally aren't all BNSF orange units some version of their "Heritage" scheme?

CSX needs a new graphic designer. They butchered two paint schemes on one loco. The overnight Chessie unit looks far better than their Chessie heritage ugly duckling.  That fade idea and diagonal blend just doesn't work for me.

UP heritage has hits and misses. The WP, MP, and DRGW units are stunning. MKT, SP, and CNW not so much, but nothing looks better than 844 and 4014.

Apparently the reason for the CSX front end is so that people would know it is a CSX engine.

Branding I guess? Does CSX have a brand outside the modeling world? Ironically employees would know by the reporting marks (and probably publicity within the company), that railfans would know is self evident, and the general public probably wouldn't care either way.

I mean, I'd probably do that too. I've met more than a few foamers who think the railroad is their personal preserve and that it should take their needs into account, if not cater to them exclusively. I was probably guilty of that when I was younger...

I caught it once in it's C&O guise, and once or twice after it was re-patched PRLX. CN was leasing anything that ran in 2018... good times.

I once had a discussion with a gentleman involved with designing CSX's "boxcar logo" (this one: [CSXT] ).  My contention is that it was rather inappropriate for a railroad transportation business, because it uses elements brought over from our social-media/texting-obsessed society, and wasn't representative of the job the railroad does.  The response was: "Well we tested it and it has better recognition numbers than the regular logo!".. My question is, tested among what group?  Corporate traffic managers?  Teenagers?  The general public at large?   In any case, yes, there is some thought given to branding.

I do appreciate the effort and intentional involvement of front-line workers on the CSX heritage project, but wish someone in the meeting (was there a professional graphic artist involved?) had drawn a hard "no" at the CSX front end/fade concept.  I guess Tyler Hardin (who designed their First Responder and Military/Vets tribute locos) volunteered his skills but wasn't called up on this job.
