I found some pics of the paint process that I forgot to include so I’ll take a step back.

After I got the decals from the printer…..

…..I made masks that matched the contour of the stripes on the Ultradomes. I drew them in Inkscape and then printed them. I cut them out and taped them to strips of frog tape which gave me perfectly sized masks for each of the four sides of the cars.

The cars were painted in base coat of Rustoleum white primer and then several coats of Vallejo white. Once the masks were applied I shot another coat of white to seal the tape. This was very important as the decal stripes could mask any imperfections on the bottom edge but the top edge would be right there in your face.

The result after shooting the blue was exactly what. Had hoped for.

Ok that’s all for paint.

On to todays progress…. Windows!

Back on another project @CNR5529 suggested we experiment with theatre gels for windows. They come in a multitude of colours including several smokey/ black tints that really do a great job of simulating window tint.

On this model I don’t want the top windows to be see through so I went with the darker of the two colours I had.

I started by cutting long strips of theatre gels equal to the widths of the windows. Those were taped down as straight and parallel as I could. This is very important. Once taped down I then laid perpendicular strips of tape equal to the height of the windows. This gave me a grid of about 100 windows.

I cut that grid apart into strips which held 5 individual windows that in theory were all the same size… and they mostly are.

In the future if I do this again I’ll use less sticky tape. I used frog tape and I ended of creasing a lot of windows trying to remove them. In the future I’d likely use cheap green painters tape which has a lot less grip.

For the application I used canopy glue. I put a bit on the window space and spread it around. I found at first that I had to hold windows in place for a long time. The result was better when I let it tack up a bit for maybe 3-4 minutes. I did this through out the day and found that my giant puddle of glue I accidentally poured thickened up and then it got really easy to apply the windows and I didn’t have to hood them at all. So in the future I’ll pour out some glue and let sit for some time before starting the application process.

And that’s it so far. I have one side of both cars done. I still need to do the other two sides and cut custom widths for the larger side/end windows, and the odd shaped ones on the actual ends of the cars.

Thanks for checking in.

Craig.

Great modelling story - well done!

There were two Rocky Mtn B36-7a in the batch of 16 ex-Santa Fr units purchased by BC Rail.  I suspect that Ricky Mtn leased them and returned them prior to the sale to BC Rail.  As I recall they stayed in those schemes for quite a while and think I photographed them at one point.

So you get double duty out of those locos!

Yes I’ve used it many times and I love it. I use the frog tape for larger jobs like this. It’s got good tack and a beautiful clean edge when you cut it. But Tamiya is still the best. Especially for conforming to details.

I thought they went to BCR. Any idea what year that would have been? That would fill in the blank for me as to when they left RMR.

Thank you. And yeah me too. On close inspection you can see that the windows aren’t exactly all the same but you’d have to stare at them, and then you’d notice all the other things wrong. Hahaha. But moving, behind trees and without my glasses they look juuuuust right. Hahaha.

Holy smokes - that window material is turning out phenomenal.   Everything is coming along beautifully!  Thanks for the comprehensive tutorial - lots of useful tricks & techniques.

From my motive power book:

All of the B36-7s were acquired in Nov 1995 but some including the GCRC units arrived before this date, possibly on initial lease and/or trial.
3605 built as Santa Fe 7488 Nov 1980; leased to GCRC 1990-1995; sold to BC Rail 3 Nov 1995; actually received 11 Oct 1994 (ahead of sale date)
3615 built as Santa Fe 7498 Nov 1980; leased to GCRC 1990-1995; sold to BC Rail 3 Nov 1995; actually received 11 Oct 1994 (ahead of sale date)

I would surmise that as the two GCRC units were already in B.C. it was not worth sending them back to the lessor as it was apparently already known that they were to be sold to BC Rail.
The other 14 units arrived between February 1995 and March 1996.

That’s great info! Slap my hand for not checking your book. I have it downstairs in the library.

So they were in use for a shorter period than I thought. I’ll have to see when the first Ultradome came into the property. They may not have even run with this loco.

Craig

Edit:

Whoops! The Ultradomes didn’t come along until 1997. Oh well. I may have to model one of these as well then!  This is a leased GP40 which was the next loco to pull the train.

Today saw the rest of the dome windows go in…

I used the same material for the side windows. Which you can’t really see in the photos. But I promise it’s there. Here’s a view looking through one of the cars.

The next step is to sort out power pick up and a constant lighting circuit so that one of the cars can have marker lights.
