I'm more than happy to dig up some paint codes for the blue/white if it'd help.  Round roof on the coach would be tremendous but not having it isn't a deal breaker.

Frisco had a significant amount of head end traffic and the lounge would have had a lunch counter -- definitely able to substitute for a full diner on an overnight St. Louis - Oklahoma City train.

@MTLJoe - please let us know what further research or prototype info would help move these sets over the finish line to production.  I don't know how to foster improved collaboration between manufacturers, but it looks like TRW members are helping to connect the dots!

Painting and Lettering diagrams and drawings of the M-K-T font in use at the time would probably be helpful.  I'm not sure you want them following the repainted museum pieces.  Color samples are important too!

I don’t think the “Laker” had any specialized or unique cars. Certainly doable.

Most of the head end cars were rebuilds from ACF cars.  I've got almost a whole Laker put together.  Just need to finish decaling.  It's a close enough consist with Walthers, MTL, Centralia (Pennsy ran a streamlined sleeper on occasion), and Wheels of Time baggage cars. 

I have the Soo Line Passenger Car drawings so if anyone has questions, feel free to hit me up.

I'm all the way in for any NWP cars!

My question is why are there not more SP cars? There are a few that MT came out with, but did they not sell well or what?

Canadian railroads had a rule about the crew size if the number of cars was five cars or less. I cannot recall exact details, but it meant that many trains were just five cars long on urban morning commuter traffic in the 1930s-1950s. In southern Ontario, branch lines from predecessor railroads were also plenty.

There were two other CNR paint schemes that intermingled with the later “black and green” scheme of 1954 that you already did. Much the most common was the simple CNR green with deluxe lettering.


A typical consist would be a baggage car or two (with express) and three coaches. CN also had huge fleets of baggage, mail, RPO, and 12-1s, along with some 10-1-2s in this scheme. Easy and common, covering a long period of time and seen daily on both sides of the border. What could be better?

Nice combine.

Photos show the all green scheme still in use on some cars in the late 50s on CN-GTW trains in and out of Chicago.  I wouldn't be surprised if a few cars went from all green to white with noodles without ever wearing the 1954 scheme.  I think MTL did at least one head end car in that scheme (horse car?).

Seeing the proof of my review of the Bachmann N scale 4-8-2 as Frisco 1501 in the upcoming October issue of Model Railroad News brought this to the front of my mind...

And the single window coach is darn close (I haven't measured all the rivet lines) to several batches of cars L&N received in the 20s.  L&N also received a number of heavyweight Pullmans in 1948. Including
16 12-1 3410
11 12-1 3410A
1 10-1-2 3585
1 10-1-2 3585A
1 3-2-lounge 3959

I think the 3-2-Lng was rebuilt into a modernized lounge or business car shortly after L&N acquired it. The sleepers ran on various L&N and "Dixie" trains until the major re-equipping in 1954.

Note that L&N lettered their heavyweight sleepers with "Pullman" on the main letterboard in palmer script in the Blue-gray scheme. But they also painted some for use on the Dixie Flagler, in silver with shadow stripes, and others for use on the Georgian and Hummingbird in silver shadowstripe with a blue window band to match the original Georgian/Hummingbird paint scheme. The various shadow stripe schemes used standard "Pullman" lettering on the letterboard.

And the MTL diner is not a bad stand in for an L&N diner.

Unfortunately, I've already painted enough of my own that I don't "need" any more.
