OK, instead of using wire, cut or file through the necessary ribs and glue a piece of .010" x .020" Styrene in the voided rib area and now the piece will be flush with the door, leaving no gaps.
Plastic will probably be easier to work with anyway, if we've all agreed that the rectangle can be a painted rectangular decal or just painted directly.
