Since we seem to be on a caboose kick...

Here's some SSW love - a C-40-8 # 21 and C-40-9 #34 - both feature 3D printed early ICC wide vision cupolas.  The Oxide underbody on #34 really makes the red pop!

Thanks to Robbie @k27463 for the assist on these cupolas!

Justin, I stand corrected. I found this on Railroad Picture Archives. This is at Hiland, a/k/a Cajon Summit.

Considering the pic is from 1985, I have to wonder if these cabeese are on their way to a scrapper. Also found another pic of one taken at West Colton around the same date. So the answer is a conditional "yes", they made it out West... but... given the dates I have to wonder if they were being collected for disposition at someplace like Purdy south of Mojave or Chrome Crankshaft in L.A., or whoever it was in Oakland they sent retired equipment to.

I left L.A. in '82 and like I said, don't recall ever seeing one firsthand. My conjecture not based on anything but general SP-ness is they kept them east to prevent 'em from accidentally making it on a train over Donner. Clearances were tight in the snowsheds and I have to wonder if the high cupolas made somebody nervous enough to keep them out of California. If you recall, SP's domes were all reduced height because of Donner, so it would sort of follow.

...mike:  I had sometimes wondered why SP didn't just buy standard domes.  Thanks for the explanation!

Taking up track isnt quite so depressing if you can relay it fairly quickly, and that is what I was able to do during this past week.  I am now working on the Sundance / Bond section which requires a fair bit of work prior to installation.  I began this week by taking up all of the track for the Fort St. John Subdivision including the old location for Septimus:

I then relaid it including the new siding at Bond, as far as the south switch.  The remaining 15 inches to the yard limit at Chetwynd will be laid after the layout section is reinstalled:

When removing the track I cut the feeder wires immediately below the track, which allowed me to connect the new feeders back in without disturbing the track bus wires:

With temporary DC power connected to the track bus, I was able to undertake a quick test to confirm that I had wired everything correctly:

And today, my friends Michael (Dayliner) and John came over for another work session, and we were able to install five more sections of benchwork in the layout room!

The Pine River section went in first:

then the sections for Tremblay:

and finally the lighting canopies above:

Not too much on the modelling front of late, but I did get the three chassis for my M-420s prepared.  This included filing off the bumps and removing the truck sideframes:

Finished the Bailey Warehouses, Main and "B" building that was built many years after the expansion of the main building.

I also kitbashed the Pennsylvania Warehousing & Safe Deposit. Have to figure out the proper roof treatment for this one.

Lastly, I bashed some DPM's into a S/R building wing for the big Merchants Warehouse.

I finished up the Fraser, BC water tank/station.  This is M scale/1:300 and was designed from scratch and 3D printed in components.  The windows are part of my new experimenting with clear resin.  The counterbalance and spout ropes are 0.005 tungsten wire that was bent in a jig (and I lost 2 to the carpet monster along the way).   Posted the completed model and one with a lighter to show the scale.

I also installed a photographic back-scene on the foam divider between the two "halves" of the layout--Mile 6 and Fraser.  The railroad is dwarfed by the mountainside here and I was trying to capture that feeling.

Finally, along with the Fraser tank windows I did some windows for the coach and DL535E.  These came out well I think, and look better than decal film or Krystal Klear.

More designing for me. I'll test print them today to check fitment on the mechanisms before adding all of the details.
On today's build plate is an early UP Challenger plus its short a$$ tender, a UP TTT 2-10-2, as well as an SP F-5 2-10-2.

Did some switching last evening:

... and placed an old MDC R-70-20 into service this morning; I fixed the capacity lettering with some Microscale decals, added an styrene exhaust stack, and installed M/T trucks with ESM wheels.  Here it is being spotted at the team track:

Layout wiring and servo fun with the turnouts for me.  This little contraption is for determining the limits of turnout point travel.

Started work on the tail end of my Whistler Northwind train today. I made an attempt to kitbash this car a few years and then result was meh. So I started over with USP sides and the result is much better so far. Used a Kato Budd observation car as a core.

All that remains for this train is the Panorma dome cars….

As a redhead, and being of Polish descent Ed does have a pale skin, but that does look a bit too pale.  And as I mentioned, the hair should be more rusty color.  :)
