Atlas 1932 riveted side boxcar?
« on: February 10, 2023, 08:02:01 AM »

I have an old Atlas Austria 40' riveted side boxcar. It has all the molded on ladders and such. I noticed Atlas has a new riveted side boxcar out called the 1932 ARA Steel Boxcar. IS the new tooled car essentially the same as the old Atlas/ Austria car?

I need a crap ton of the Atlas/ Austria style car. So if the newer tooled Atlas/ China car is the same car, then I am good with it too.

What’s the prototype car you’re trying to model? Let’s figure out what that is and then find the best way to model it.

It is "essentially" the same, rectangular, two trucks with wheels, molded on whatever., really not sure how one qualifies "essentially". Atlas has endeavored to generally improve their product line over the years and IMHO, the new Atlas cars are a major improvement in almost every aspect. Visit a local hobby shop or look at the pictures of the cars on the internet and see for yourself if the improvements in the recent Atlas line are relevant to YOUR modeling efforts. Do you want the old style couplers or Kadee/MT compatible couplers. The differences may or may not be relevant to you or as they say YMMV.

My own opinion, no offense to the A!G collectors, is that the most recent Atlas tooling are clearly the best.

Last, the availability of the old Atlas cars is nominal, you would have an easier time getting large numbers of the new models.

Bill

Spookshow shows the car here : http://www.spookshow.net/freight/atlasroco1dbox.html

None of the current Atlas cars match, or are even all that close.

George,

That is the car I am looking for and is also the car I have. My stirrup steps are broken, so I will have to create a photo etch sheet with new steps.

The car in your link is the closest I can find to match a 1937 AAR riveted side boxcar. Thanks for posting that link. I had forgotten about that page. Looks like I will be on the hunt in at the next train show here in Raleigh this May. I need a bunch of those cars.

Brian-

Intermountain makes the 1937 AAR boxcar that you're after. As a bonus, ends, roof and doors are separate, so we can probably match your prototype with the right parts as well.

The 1932 car is going to have a lower roof height, and the old Atlas car is not going to live up to modern standards.

Yeah, I tried Intermountain. I called them a couple days ago. They listed that kit as a pre-order and I was told that was a mistake and should not be there. No dice on that car and no promise of it being run again anytime soon.

I am OK with the older car. I know it is not up to todays standards and I can get them. I have a total of five of them now and a few more with offers. Individual ladders and grab irons are not all that important to me anymore. The only important individual hand grab I want is on tank cars. The hand grab that wraps around the car. The reason for that is because it makes apply decals much easier than applying them over the grab and then trimming them away.

Brian:
Put an automated search in on eBay for the car you need. Over time, I built a fleet of a specific car that I needed. Be patient, and don't over bid.

If it is the BAR State of Maine boxcar, I know there have been some special runs with multiple numbers aside from the older IM run. Patience, they are out there, you just have to have your wallet out at the right time.

Here's one I just found with a simple google search. https://www.whiterosehobbies.com/products/eastern-seaboard-models-225105-n-scale-magor-xih-boxcar-bangor-aroostook-state-of-maine-bar-2213

Actually - that's an entirely different prototype.

Bill,

I am only looking for the car itself. I will strip the cars, create my own decals and then repaint and decorate.

Getting back to N means I have to start accumulating projects and get all the necessary supporting items like wheels, trucks, brakes and what not. My first freight car project is stalled waiting on decals and trucks. So right now I am in a long waiting game until I can amass the necessary items to build my projects. The big project is going to be when I start collecting all the coal hoppers I will need to populate my railroad. Then I have to paint and decorate them all. Not so bad though if I have an actual layout to populate. It goes pretty quickly.

When I was building my HO collecting. In one year I was able to finish just under 200 cars. I think with N, I will be able to easily match that.

Brian;
What specific IM kit or car body type were you trying to find? I have somewhere between 200-300 IM boxcars built from kits that I am starting to thin out due to duplicate numbers and my lacking the time to renumber. If you were planning to strip and repaint, I might have some to get you going - of course if I have the body type you need.

All have been converted to MT 1015 body mounts, weighted to NMRA specs and IM metal wheels.

Kind regards,
Bill

InterMountain AAR 1937 boxcars and their offshoots are very easy to find on the secondary market, even in kit form.  The original half-century-old Yugoslavian-made A1G models are not even adequate for background models at this point.  The only models from that tooling-era that still are passable as is are most of the RivaRossi-tooled models.  There may be an AHM model or two that could pass with some work, such as the 55' DuPont container car.  But not much else if any.

I dug out my example of the Atlas/Austria (Roco) 40' boxcar (the one that @learmoia shows in GN paint) for a closer look.  Alas, it's a frankenmodel.   The sides do resemble an AAR 1937 car (albeit likely with a mid-1940s 10'6" IH), but the roof and ends are from a PS1.   Pretty sure no such car ever existed  :(.
