I finished my 3D printed N scale D&RGW "Fowler Clone" single sheathed boxcar.  I weathered it by first using a black wash made with Winsor & Newton black oil paint thinned with Turpenoid synthetic turpentine. I also used a gray wash in selective spots.  Next I mixed a lighter shade of the base color by mixing some white in with the Polly Scale Boxcar Red.  I then lightly dry brushed this on the raised surfaces of the boxcar and trucks in order to make the details stand out more.  I thought this was important to do since the ladders and some of the grab irons are not free standing.  I then airbrushed a mat coat over everything.  Once that was dry I attached the underside of the boxcar to the body shell (after adding weight), mounted the Micro-Trains Z scale couplers, attached the BLMA air hoses, which had been painted ahead of time off the model.  The faces and axles of the Fox Valley Model wheels were painted with Polly Scale Railroad Tie Brown and weathered with a rust colored wash.  The last step was using some Bragdon Enterprises weathering powders along the lower sill, along with various colors lightly applied to areas of the roof.

You can see from the last few photos that these 40' cars were significantly smaller than 40' all-steel cars.  I sort of felt like I was working on a Z scale boxcar.  Though adding scratch built full under body detail was probably overkill for a car that will live on the layout, and thus not really be visible, I have to say the under car detail does look pretty cool in these photos.  So, it was worth the time and effort I'd say.  All in all I'm happy with this build.  It's my first N scale project in nearly 12 years, so hopefully this stimulates the motivation to get more done on my layout.

I finished installing the lighting over the existing layout sections.  I simulated the upper fascia over the New Haven section to confirm that the light would be focused on the layout and that there would be no "sun-glare" on the control panels.  The lighting will help in finishing some modifications to the right-of-way under the Cedar Street overpass as well as the swing bridge over Shaw's Cove.

Erik:  You have done a great job on the boxcar.

After getting the new benchwork for Septimus installed last weekend, I started on trackbed and tracklaying this week.

This is the reverse curve out of the passage through the wall, with feeders attached and dropped down below:




And these are the south switches at Septimus, with frog feeders attached and holes for the throw wires drilled:




I also made further progress on my MLW M-420B build, adding front and rear end grab irons, round access covers, door handles, hostlers window frame and horn:






I am waiting for a few replacement parts which will hopefully arrive next week.

What type of lights did you install? Fluorescent or are they LED? Why fixtures instead of strip lights? I’m wrestling over the proverbial battle of temperature, lumens and lighting type for the Delaware Branch.

I finished up another baggage car for my Rock Island passenger train.

This was an undecorated Rapido model.  I installed the grab irons, painted it, installed decals (K4 Supply), and gave it a quick spray of dulcote.

I may weather this one a bit.

Closest prototype photo I found on a Rock Island baggage car is attached.  After studying the prototype photo a bit, I think I can get closer to this car by starting with an old Atlas/ConCor/Rivarrosi full baggage.  It's a Santa Fe prototype, but it is the correct length (the RI car was converted from a heavyweight dining car).  I'll need to convert the roof from clerestory to bubble-top and change out the doors.

Time to get on that well-know auction site and find a heavyweight baggage car to convert....

Ground level for the main level is 39" above the floor.  Shaw's Cove water basin is roughly 2" below that.  Lower hidden level is 14" below the main level, rail top to rail top.  Future upper level will be 18" above the main level, rail top to rail top.  Main level fascia is 6" high, fascia height for the top level and the lights above the top level will be 4".

Barrina 4' LED T5 shop lights, 5,000 kelvins, 2,200 lumens.  They clip into secured brackets and can be connected to provide single fixtures in multiples of 4' lengths.   Fixtures not joined can be daisy chained.  They provide a diffused lighting effect that minimizes shadows, particularly if two rows are mounted adjacent.  Far more efficient and economical than strip lights.  They also provide other temperatures if a hazy noon sky is not the effect desired.  I think they are sufficiently bright, and I'm very pleased that there is no excessive light-bleed.  Even without the temporary fascia, the light does not bleed directly onto the control panel.  Power cords with on/off rocker switches are included, but I used straight T5 power cords to a modified power block mounted in the rafters and moved the on/off rocker switch to the control panel fascia.
