I started and finished another JnJ coach in Rock Island paint.

I did a few things different on Chicago than I did on Enid:

-Used American Limited trucks and Kato low profile metal wheels
-Cut the center skirting off the car
-Used thinner clear styrene for the main windows

I body mounted MT 1015 couplers again.  This one used only Micro Scale decals.  Paint is Krylon Dull Aluminum.

I'm getting better at these the more that I do. This one turned out the best of the three JnJ shells so far.

Here's a few photos of the how the entire train is progressing so far.  I added some more head end cars that would have been appropriate for the train.

This is the upper level exit out of the helix on the layout. Disguising it with a tunnel portal and a river scene. As you can see, there’s still quite a bit of work to do before. The scene will be finished.

Happy New Year
This weekend I make a fixture to hold a Dremel stylus tool with a diamond cut-off wheel.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Then used it to rip a bunch of pcb ties.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

The ties are being used to build my first hand-laid turnout.

We couldn't fit the whole module into @PiperguyUMD 's trunk, so we pulled the roundhouse to send it on its way.

John,

Nice "vintage" B&W shot! Is that a Oriental Limited 2-8-0 or a Key? IF OL, any tips on how you mounted a coupler to the pilot?
Thanks in advance....

I continue to be impressed and humbled by all the magnificent work I see posted here every week--checking out what you are all doing is a great way to start the new year!

Yesterday my friend Tim came round to help with a job that needed more than two hands--installing the servos to operate the turnouts.  Completing this task would meet the year-end goal I had set for myself when I began this rebuild project.  Unfortunately, it didn't quite go according to plan as we encountered operational issues with some of the servos and singlets. Oh well, these things happen. Undaunted, I decided to bypass the recalcitrant servos for the time being, and move on anyway to the next phase of the project.

First, tracklaying completed at the east end of Lake Cowichan:

Now the fun begins--removal of the sub-roadbed under Lake Cowichan:

Then, the holes that had accommodated the former turnout control mechanisms in their former locations were plugged with lengths of 1/4" dowel, and excess roadbed was removed:

Finally, some playing around with track and rolling stock confirms that the proposed track arrangement will accommodate the trains I want to run:

Happy New Year, everyone!

Happy New Year!

After a long hiatus, I fired up Fusion and made a mockup of the main building of Cone Drive in Traverse City MI.  Here it is printed up on my FDM printer with a wood foundation and roof.  The corners are just taped together right now.  It is true to scale, but I've taken some license and added an extra 3 doors to it. Also, based on some areal photos, it looks like the rail cars actually arrive in a well with the main building floor level at grade, similar to many modern loading docks.  I wasn't able to do that in this space, but it would be a fun detail to capture another time.

If you want, the Kato pre-war Budd diner (early 4 car corrugated sets) is very close to Rock Island. I think @Wutter did that car.

I did do that car, but for some reason can't find pictures of it from before I sold it. The correct names for that car are 420 Mount Evans and 421 Centennial; originally assigned to the Rocky Mountain Rocket and built in 1939. I don't know about the interior arrangement but the exterior window placement is the same as the CB&Q Budd car.

Golden Banquet was built in 1947 for the Golden State and had a "Golden State" letterboard most of its life until the train was cancelled in 1968. So depending on what period of time you want to represent, you can pick the right diner for your timeframe.

I've finally gotten around to posting a couple of updates to my layout build thread....10 months after my last update.  I made a bit of a change to my layout plan, which you can read more about here: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=43622.60

Over the holiday break, I've been working on adding further structure to the scenery along the Hudson Highlands portion of the layout:
