Not really. The frame is solid metal and the driver axles just go holes in it.  The drivers are free-spinning. No gearing or even openings for gear in the frame.  You would basically have to remake the entire chassis.

What Pete says. It would mean to build a complete drive system.

If someone is really considering a 2-10-0 from Minitrix or Fleischmann - I'm talking about the DRG/DB class 43 steamer - don't forget to check out the class 43 or 44 from Roco.
The Roco steamer are good runners as well and don't have a max speed of Warp 10.

It's been a while since Roco produced any N scale models.  So that Class 43 must be a vintage model or did Fleischmann released a new run using Roco's old tooling (since Fleischmann and Roco are now one company)?  Actually come to think of it, Fleischmann is releasing old Roco N scale models under Fleischmann name.

The  class 43 I have is one from the time when Roco was an independed company. So yeah, it is quite old.

Are all Fleischman models tender drive? I wonder why they are designed that way, it really decreases the pulling power of the locomotive.

Yes, most of the ones with tenders are tender-drive. Not sure why. This probably goes back to the times when the motors they were using were too large to fit in the loco, so they put them in the tenders. They probably just kept the same design. It also results in a mechanically simpler design, as easier to power the tender wheels then the siderod-coupled (and also  geared) loco wheels.

Arnold approached this a bit differently.  Some of their locos had a motors in the tender and a long driveshaft between the tender and the loco driving the worm in the boiler, which then powered the loco's drivers, leaving the tender to roll freely and also having it (and the loco) pickup power from the track.

This new Arnold loco has nicely proportioned drivers with smaller flanges.  Could be a good chassis:

Hmm . . . looks like all 3 major German N scale manufacturers have 2-10-0 models.  That one looks promising.  Like Fleischmann, it has very small flanges on the inner 3 drivers, making the driver size and spacing look good.

I'm digging the Arnold engine.  Nice drivers and valve gear with delicate thin pieces that have potential to be reworked for the I1s.
Randy, you are correct... you should know better.   :D
But good luck on your project!

Yes, clunky and toylike siderods and valve gear in N scale engines are a huge turnoff for me.  So are solid (not see-through) spoke drivers.  Fortunately that is not a problem with pretty much every German made model, even since early days of N scale.

Yeah, I really like the Arnold drivers and siderods.  If I were going to pick a chassis, I would go with that one.  Maybe I will pick one up for Christmas and see what I can do with it!

DM-Toys has them in stock for 199 Euro, plus 20 Euro shipping cost. Shipping to USA (they use UPS or DHL) only takes about 3 days.  With the current exchange rate, that is a good deal.

https://www.dm-toys.de/en/product-details/Arnold_HN2333.html (the fairly high res photo shows the model's details).

Another advantage are solid wheels on the first axle.

I think one of the reasons is, that the look of the engine is more prototypical, because you can 'see through' the loco.

Reworking those Arnold cylinders will be a PITA as the upper plastic supports are part of them it appears to me, but thr rest of the model looks nice. Wonder what the driver diameter is.
