PRR’s The General

I was perusing the H0 Scale name trains that Walthers is doing and noticed how much equipment is available in N to do The General.

Upon throwing the cars together, a mix of Kato and Centralia, I noticed the color difference on the P85 Coaches.

I think the Kato colors are closer. I remember Bruce say that Floquil boxcar red was always his go to color in HO scale. Kato is closer to that than the maroon of the Centralia cars.

Ok, full repaint?

Well, before we do that, I wonder if we could shift the color.

Kudos to Mike Danneman and Marlin Cox on planting the seed for this being a possibility. One time at Mike’s layout they were debating Rio Grande aspen gold. They took the Centralia factory car, with its too light yellow, and over sprayed transparent orange to dial in the color. Fantastic.

Ok. That was lighter to darker. Here we actually need to lighten the color.

I had recently done a GHQ R50 and sprayed it with a mix of NATO Brown and Dull Red. It matched the Kato colors well in the end.

Here we go.

Mask the windows. Mask the roof. Over spray with Tamiya Dull Red. Scrape the paint off the lettering and stripes with a toothpick.  Silver Sharpie the window frames.  Overspray with Tamiya semi gloss.

Hot damn.

Pretty close!

To the left is the Kato diner, on its way to a Budd conversion. But stock paint.

To the right is the stock Centralia color.

lol my car has white LED fog lights. I wanted them yellow and the yellow tint made them look green because LEDs are a bit blue. So I used orange/red lighting gels behind the yellow tint to filter out the blue.

although i haven't found the car sheet for it, in theory, a mid-train lounge might be appropriate

Pretty sure that Lowell Smith said the  Catalpa Falls was going to be one of the 3 cars on next summers excursion

Speaking of Catalpa Falls, I just ran across the consist listing over at PennsyRR.com.  No date listed, but Jerry is including Catalpa Falls as one of the 6DBR-Bar Lounges.

I also like this consist since it includes a betterment heavyweight pullman.  Heavyweights with skirts are cool.

In this instance, what does "Twin Unit" mean?  Such as noted in #4616 and #4617?

It means two articulated cars, one is the kitchen and the other is the crew dormitory.  The prototype of what Kato designed for the Broadway Limited.

Question for the Pennsy folks.  Walthers did the Budd twin unit diner for their General. But wouldn’t the better Budd set be more likely to end up on the Broadway?

I can do either. The Budd set is cool, and the 21 roomette roof snaps onto the Kato diners. Then a couple scribe lines to simulate the slab sides and maybe change the car ends.

But should I just use the Kato Broadway diners as is and do the cool Budd diners on the Broadway?

That would b my preference if the Pennsy models are close to the Mopac prototype.  Excellent models with the articulation already integrated.
