Looks like Congress is set to cram down a contract that won't make labor happy.

Shall we open a betting pool on how long it takes for railroaders to quit and railroads to publicly lobby for single person crews?

This theatre is all about the imposition of one man crews... create a crisis by eliminating too many people for half a decade, then pull the one man crew solution out of your hat. People are expendable, hedge fund profits are not.

Well, I wish you guys luck anyway. Being an airline pilot and also covered by the railway labor act has been a very sobering experience for the last 30 years. Truly tilts the playing field towards the companies and away from the employees. It is a all but impossible for airline employees to strike also, and we have paid the price. Single pilot aircraft crewing is also an over the horizon threat, which will solve the “pilot shortage” that crappy working conditions have helped create over the last 20 years. The airlines used 9-11 as a cudgel against pilots such that they killed their own pipeline and now want labor to fix the shortage for them…

The House has passed two bills - one implementing the agreement just voted on by the unions, and a second to add 7 paid sick days to the pot.  The first is most assuredly going to pass the Senate - perhaps with some grandstanding, perhaps not. The second likely won't.  Remains to be seen how rank and file will react to the cram down:

Quote
By a 290 to 137 vote, the House passed the tentative rail agreement that will prevent a rail strike. The vote was largely bipartisan, with 79 Republicans joining Democrats in voting for the bill. Eight Democrats voted against the bill.

In a separate vote, the House also voted 221 to 207 to add a provision to the rail agreement that would increase the number of paid sick days from one to seven. The bill was passed largely down party lines, with just three Republicans, including John Katko of New York, and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania crossing over to vote with Democrats on that measure.

Not so sure on that.. Senate sent it back to the table last time.  If the main bill vote falls on party lines, then I think it will hinge on passage of the 7 day sick leave bill, or they could add sick days and send it back to the house.

But in the end, I think Congress will pass something to avoid the strike.

Edit Nevermind....

The recent tragedy at ORD should shut that down for all time but it probably won't... I imagine that they'll push for tighter Class I standards which will exacerbate the shortage. Which reminds me I need to start my medxpress process.

The Senate has passed the main bill, but failed to pass the added 7 days of sick leave the House proposed.  Its now on to the President to sign.

I always thought sick days was a federal law. Right now I get 13 weeks of sick time.

Rail has separate labor laws from the rest of us.

Funny, I just heard a new segment where they mentioned that sick time is not mandatory. It is up to individual companies to decide whether and how much sick time they give to employees.

13 Weeks?  Is that sick plus vacations?  Just sick time seems a bit excessive.

Possible. Or at least it used to be possible. Jobs I worked in the past awarded one week of sick days per year, and unused days could be carried over ad infinitum.

Looks like the carriers plan is working out perfectly.

1. Bargain in bad faith.
2. Have the government force a ***** contract on the employees.
3. Employees quit and cause an "unforeseeable labor crisis".
4. Have perfect cover to implement one man crews "for the good of the economy".
5. Profit

6. Send thoughts and prayers to the members of communities wiped out in derailments.

Not sick days, but sick time. If I get sick they will hold my job for 13 weeks. I think it builds up to that and they don't tell you how many you get, but we all know.

FMLA provides for up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for certain medical situations for either the employee or a member of the employee's immediate family.
