I would expect that the height of brake wheels would be the height that is convenient for an average size man to grip and put force on them to turn them.

Are those narrow gauge cars that are smaller than standard gauge cars?  Narrow gauge cars are the ones that I usually notice have what look like taller-than-normal brake wheels.

The photo credits say Silverton, CO, so almost certainly they are narrow gauge.   Of course, the photo credits also say they are box cars, when they would appear to be stock cars.

After a vacation to Colorado, which is always inspiring, I spent some time updating my website and alternate history. The endeavor resulted in my first attempt at photo stacking. It was a manual quickie job before rushing off to work, so I need to go back to the photoshop file and tweak it, but at the resolution I’m presenting it, it’s still striking how much bigger the GG-1 looks!



Still working on updating the map, but it’s nice to be working on refining things again.

The photo credits say Silverton, CO, so almost certainly they are narrow gauge.   

Not in Silverton, but on the train ride from Durango to Silverton.  I would guess the siding at the Tacoma Power Plant.

I'm going to have to try to find the photos I took around Leadville, CO, on my last adventure to Colorado, almost 20 years ago.

Meanwhile, I did get in a little modeling this week.  This is an AT&SF Tk-J built from a kit by ATSFNSCALEMODELS. Gave it a bath after the photos and it is drying now.  Hopefully will get some paint on it over the weekend.

It’s the switch they would use to wye trains at the depot, or trains headed from the depot toward Minneapolis Junction would use.

On my layout, I oriented the depot perpendicular to the river, as opposed to parallel on the prototype, so the bridge switch is just a way to reach additional trackage in the depot

Boom Island was one of those prototype places I had to leave out (along with the East channel crossing of the river) unfortunately.

Plus you still have Nicollet Island to cross to even get to Boom Island.
