I just got notification of an upcoming Stout Auction which contains a lot of N Scale brass models of UP/SP/ATSF steam and diesel.  There's a little PRR as well.

If you bid on anything from Stouts make sure you read the fine print before you do. They charge a percentage based on the final cost of the listing. I think it was a little under 20%. So basically if you win a $100 item you’ll be paying $120. Seemed odd that they were charging this to the buyer. Also you have to pay for the listing before they pack it. When ready for shipment, they send you a second invoice for the shipping. I thought the shipping was reasonable and they packed the trains well. I knew about this before bidding so I wasn’t surprised but it could possibly be missed by some people.

Thanks. I've never participated in one of their auctions so that was news to me.  I haven't looked over the fine print in much detail.  This one has a coupl eitems of interest so I may.

I see this on each listing in a drop down box that you have to click to see.  Seems like it should be visible by default so it's not a surprise.

It's fun just to sit and watch one of these auctions go off.  If there is an item you're interested in, don't blink, male sure your internet connection is good and your mouse/keyboard in good order bc bidding is fast and lots close every 15-30 seconds

You're not kidding. Unlike eBay, I didn't even know if I won the listings when they ended. It all goes so fast.

That was a cool auction.  There were definitely some deals on some fairly rare brass locos to be had.

I was surprised at how low the HO brass went for the most part.  And some of the N Scale ATSF brass steam went for under $300.

I found 3 items I'm interested in.  I put in bids for them. If I win all three I'll be hurting but I expect to lose them all.

C&O H-8: https://connect.invaluable.com/stout/auction-lot/Key-Imports-N-scale-brass-Chesapeake-and-Ohio-2-6_09949BFAC3/

I have an H9 so I let the H8sa go.  But I dozed off waiting for the Hippo and lost it by $25

I went for the C&O H-8 but dropped when it hit $1550.  I wanted one but wasn't going that far.

Yeah, that C&O loco went really high.  I was surprised as well how low some of the O scale brass was going.  A two rail PRR J1 went for $350 in pristine condition.

I applied a few days before the auction, and it took about 24 hours for approval.

Thanks for the link. I wound up with 4. One was an impulse. I just couldn't let a brass 2-8-0 go for 80. So I bid 90 and to my shock, got it.

But ya. That one that went for $1550 just blew my mind.

The bottom line is that the hobby is changing. I had high hopes of buying a N scale Shay. But after looking high and low, I now realize that luck will play into this a bit.

I just attended my first in person train auction over the weekend.  Dynamics are definitely changing, and I'm cornfused.   Multiple lots were bought by show dealers at inflated prices, some above retail for items that are still readily available.   One sets up at Timonium regularly, so will be interesting to see if items he purchased are there and what he has pricing at

The Key Imports C&O H-8 Allegheny is a rare one.  They have gone as high as $1800 on Ebay.  If I had gotten it at my original bid of $1200 it would have been a steal.  I dropped out at $1500  Maybe I should have gone $1600 but I have a feeling whoever was bidding against me probably would have gone $1650.  I want one (actually I want around 5 or 6 for a Hinton scene) but not quite that badly.  What really gets me is that I snoozed (literally) through the I1sa Hippo.  I bid $500 last week and someone went $525 the morning of the auction and nobody bid on it during the auction.   I would have gone $700 or so.  The last one I saw available was @cbroughton67 had one on Ebay that went for $850 I believe, but it had a Tsunami sound decoder and weathering.  Plus it was a Chris Broughton special.  All I can say is that BLI better do what the rumors hinted and and bring some of these out in 2023/2024.  They're getting mighty pricey in brass.
