After ignoring my N scale Colorado Midland 2.0 for quite a few months I decided it was high-time for some Wild West JFRTM in N scale.









This ten-wheeler was a @Chris333 project...I just added a few extra details and painted her for the Midland. Chris lowered it, modified the tender, and changed the pilot among other mods.



And lastly, a quick 5-minute video showing that yes, indeed, the trains move on their own.

Just finished up the second of five U33B's  #299

Another thing I've been wanting to do is to get brighter headlights.
The glazing on these B30-7's really suck for transfering light! 
I wound up removing the glazing, in this case it consisted of the headlights and numberboards, but not the front windows.  I picked up some .030" clear fiber optics, flared one end slightly with a flame, cut them about 3/8" long and glued them in place.  Then I glued a 804 LED to the ends and soldered the wire leads to the front light pads on the chip after removing the surface mount LED.

I filled in the numboards with a 2 part epoxy till they were flat, then painted them black and applied some Shellscale decals.

This is about 10 times brighter than the stock setup.
They'll actually leave a glare on the railheads with the lights out, but the camera doesn't pick it up very good.
 


Here's a LifeLike GP18 that I did while first testing the idea.
I did not use the fiber optics on the GP, I just glued the LED right up to the glazing.

Boy, some spectacular modelling and photography already this weekend.  Well done everyone!

I am trying to get back into the groove after an overseas vacation and before returning to work in another week.  I received my replacement Rapido tank cars and have got the first three ready for weathering ater changing out the wheel sets and adding safety placards:




I also spent a few days attempting a test rig for my 150-Ton Brownhoist crane.  After a visit to the museum to map out the rigging arrangement, I used a set of spare parts on which to practice and tried to duplicate the prototype rig using .008" brass wire:








I am not sure if the .008" wire looks too heavy; I thought that going down to .006" wire might be too flexible.  I then brush painted the wires to see what that would look like: 




I then added the main and auxiliary hooks:




After painting and drying the wires seemed to be stronger and are quite secure in place.  Hopefully I can improve on this when I rig the final model.


I also assembled a GHQ loader for my tie train project.  I replaced the rear bucket with a REM grapple attachment to match what I am seeing in prototype photos of a BCR tie train:

Looks like you missed the memo, Track29 Models now has the rights to print the CB&Q NE-12 Way Car.

FPSM has recently acquired the rights to print models formerly for sale by Out of the Box Models in scales other than N. N scale prints of the below models are available from Track29 Models. All of these models were originally designed in N scale, and I’ll need to scale them up and add features for HO trucks/mechanisms. If you’re interested in any of these models in HO or any scale other than N, get in touch as I’ll be able to get you a model quicker and cheaper than from scratch.

No modeling from me this week, but I did have an offer accepted on a house! One of the bedrooms will be designated as Train Room I think, but I'm not going to make more plans than that until after I take possession.
