Louis, I used actual plywood.  Yup, this is thin veneer craft plywood from a graft supply store, that I cut into scale 4' x 8' blocks.  I used small strips of basswood for spacers.

Here is a little more recent progress on the N scale Housatonic RR from this past week. This is the storage spur in New Milford. I got the spur tracks painted, weathered and ballasted.

I added in a pole line to the Kimberly Clark transformer substation and along with some ground cover and weeds.

I started to work on the scene where the HRRC crosses its namesake Housatonic River in New Milford. I removed the three-bridge span, and then began excavating for the steel sheet retaining wall and the marina located at the Bleachery. I cut the walls, mocked up a quick proof of concept layout using craft foam and finally painted and weathered the retaining wall sections. They are just sitting in place now. The floating docks and boat slips will be made from scale strip wood. I will then do the final paint on the river surface and pour 2-part, tinted resin "water." Vegetation, boats, etc. will be added after that... eventually.

No new progress to report, but here is an aerial view of the Canaan, CT area.  The Canaan Union Station is in the background, Specialty Minerals is on the right and part of the Canaan yard is on the lower left.  There is still a lot of detailing left to be done for Specialty Minerals, but that will be a winter-time series of small projects.

It looks like the Saturday morning breakfast rush is dwindling at Collins Diner in Canaan.  This is a great spot to start the railfanning day after breakfast, with the Canaan Wye and the old Union Station right across the parking lot.

I have not done much in the way of layout work, although I did clean off my modeling workbench. That was done in preparation for my family Christmas party last weekend. We cooked and prepped for 30 people. It was a great day and most of my family had never seen my layout, so it was fun to show it off a bit and especially fun to watch some of the younger kids running a 42 car freight train around the layout. I am kicking myself for not taking photos of that! I did at least get a photo of my modeling workbench. I have the same LED lighting over my workspace, as I do over the layout, to help me with color matching.

It wasn't like that a week ago!  I purged a lot of surplus items I have not used in years.  I like to have open space when I am modeling, but there were the real life piles of stuff accumulating prior to this clean up job.

Very nice! We are all pressed for space and yet, there's often a lot of it under the layout, especially if the benchwork is built high enough, and it's unused or used to store junk that could be elsewhere (or tossed). Nicely done!
Oh and the layout is looking wonderful, too!
