I love big electrics, so I'd been thinking the same thing. At 88' long it's longer than even a SD80MAC, but shorter than a DD40AX.Turns out though it is bang on for a DD35, and it is possible to modify a DD40AX to DD35 length: https://jamestrainparts.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/dd35-instructions1.pdfI just don't know how well Atlas or Kato shell parts would work with the Bachmann chassis, although there is an unpowered chassis available from James Train Parts on Shapeways.
Dooooo it!!Also, I disagree about the early paints. Maybe not right to the wall, but still the big road unit logo: https://conrailphotos.thecrhs.org/photos/cr-6831-selkirk-ny-8-10-1979
What would the paint scheme look like on a double cab engine? Also, I'm guessing that the brake ratchet would only be at one end and that would be designated the front, correct?

Maybe build the model first then worry about paint scheme? In terms of kitbashing though, isn't even the 21st century version of the Bachmann DD a bit of a widebody? Also, I seem to recall the trucks were lacking in terms of "relief" detail. If the chassis will fit under a scale (Atlas) or "scalish" (Kato) hood - then maybe it could still be a go.
Thhe funny thing is the original model had decent trucks. It was when they re-ran it with DCC that it got those funky boxes.
