I love big electrics, so I'd been thinking the same thing.

At 88' long it's longer than even a SD80MAC, but shorter than a DD40AX.
Turns out though it is bang on for a DD35, and it is possible to modify a DD40AX to DD35 length: https://jamestrainparts.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/dd35-instructions1.pdf
I just don't know how well Atlas or Kato shell parts would work with the Bachmann chassis, although there is an unpowered chassis available from James Train Parts on Shapeways.

DDA40X.

I suspect that EMD designed it to reuse the DD35 frame and trucks on purpose.  After all, the electrical "stuff" wouldn't have needed that much room, so it could have been made shorter.

Dooooo it!!

Also, I disagree about the early paints. Maybe not right to the wall, but still the big road unit logo: https://conrailphotos.thecrhs.org/photos/cr-6831-selkirk-ny-8-10-1979

What would the paint scheme look like on a double cab engine?

Also, I'm guessing that the brake ratchet would only be at one end and that would be designated the front, correct?

Who knows?

But it's fun to think about.

One thing to keep in mind about this is that it would've been a PRR and then PC unit.

The idea of one of these in a patch job?

I don't know, either, but here's how they did it on the double cab GG1:

Maybe build the model first then worry about paint scheme?

In terms of kitbashing though, isn't even the 21st century version of the Bachmann DD a bit of a widebody? Also, I seem to recall the trucks were lacking in terms of "relief" detail.

If the chassis will fit under a scale (Atlas) or "scalish" (Kato) hood - then maybe it could still be a go.  :D

Thhe funny thing is the original model had decent trucks. It was when they re-ran it with DCC that it got those funky boxes.

That's why I'm thinking of using first gen Bachmann DD40AX on a first gen Bachmann SD40-2 frame. The other idea would be to use various parts from Shapeways and make a dummy unit.
