The U.S. semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) is in 2026.  I wonder if the railroads will paint any motive power as cool as they did in the 1970s for the bicentennial:

A couple of weeks ago I started work on the Orange Street Underpass in Missoula, MT.

The Next Step in the scene was to build the Pacific Fruit and Produce company.  I don't mind scratch building but I think kit-bashing can be just as rewarding.  For this structure I decided to do a "close enough" using the old NMRA Headquarters kit.

I spliced walls, built a bay window, used foundation parts from the Walthers modulars, etc.  Still need to add stair railings and the sign is just a quickie made on a printer which I will improve.

The underpass and Pacific Fruit were placed on the layout and the fascia cut out to accept it.

Hegs awesome, I am going to scratch vs. kits or kitbashing.

The Rico-Argentine Pro Patria Mill at Rico, CO on my layout has a very new look. The original was some of my earliest work on the RGS, and I grew to dislike it immensely.  It never really captured the shapes, textures, or size of the prototype. Hell, I didn't even like the color.  So over the last two weeks, I built a replacement. The core is still a Grandt Line East Terrible Mill kit but I’d say a good 75% of the final product is scratchbuilt. There’s still more work to do, but I’m at a point where I can take a break. The entire surrounding scene was also revised.

So this is the new version.

Comparison:

I also uncluttered the surroundings by removing a house and the Rico ore sampling works. I extended the hill to the right of the mill all the way to meet up with the hill behind the Rico depot and used real Colorado mill tailings to match.

Grabbed a TCS decoder today from Des Plaines Hobbies (ended up at Lombard too to grab some kapton tape) and did the installation this evening on my PRR E8A 5890.

Got the main layout done for my dad.  Some work yet to go on the buildings.  Trees, people and other detail will be added after I ship it to Pennsylvania.

I have made a proof-of-concept 3d print. A Boston & Maine R1d boiler on a Kato FEF-3 mechanism. Its sitting high at the moment, but there's space to lower it. I'll need to cut out a few feet between the locomotive and the tender, and make a new trailing truck. But it should be do-able.

What a great idea!   I tried to kitbash an R1d out of a Bachmann 4-8-4 years ago, but gave up in frustration with the general junkiness of the mechanism and crudeness (and warpedness) of the shell casting.

Went to the Atlantic County (NJ) 4-H Train Show and mingled with the rabble of the modeling world.  :)
Had a great time with @Ntrainz1, @ChristianJDavis1, @Ed Kapuscinski, @EL3632, @PRSL66, John Kern, and others.
Found a local source for T Trak modules. (Yeah! no shipping costs)!

I am not one who is interested with N scale vehicles, but I decided to see what I could do with some Wiking vehicles. The N scale cement truck below is kind of my first try at it.

Finished the RBB&B Zacchini human cannonball truck today.  A combination of a kitbashed Showcase Miniatures Mack B tractor cab and a 3d-printed cannon payload.  Etched stainless steel grill and medallion, medallion decal printed on a color LaserJet.

The L&N "Pan American" detoured over the Clinchfield Railroad Blue Ridge Subdivision today.  Railfans were able to shoot quite a few photos of the unusual move as the train made its way between Bostic, NC and Erwin, TN.

Many thanks to Ken Borowski for letting me shoot photos of my "Pan American" on his beautiful N scale Clinchfield Railroad today.  The train really looked in its element running through the rugged mountain scenery of the Blue Ridge Subdivision.
