Another “self-portrait” on a picture-perfect Saturday 2/26/22. Train Z PTLCHC7-24A. We are sitting at Victory, WI, and I’m waiting for my conductor to get to the rear of the train to protect the shove back five miles to Genoa. We’ve been tying a lot of trains down on the main again, and sometimes the powers that be want one out of the “back of the pack,” as was the case this day.

Victory got its name for the nearby final (tragic, you might say) battle of the Black Hawk War in 1832 at the Bad Axe River. It is one of the few places where the Mississippi still retains a bit of its narrower, pre-dammed appearance, and the shipping channel comes up close to the Wisconsin side. A nice set of S curves made it a popular spot for CB&Q company photographers.

With the length of trains these days, that could be a couple of hours walk :D

“Walk?!” What’s that?? Lol, We have crew vans and a DP motor for the conductor to ride in. You should hear the complaining when they have to do any “real” work!!

*I jest, as it is in the railroaders’ DNA to complain about everything. It’s what we all do best.

Wow, the conductor rides in the DPU?  I've never seen that here and twelve to fifteen thousand foot trains regularly go through here.  And, it's very rare when the tracks are near enough to a road for a crew van.  On the other hand, I did see a crew change in the middle of nowhere when the crew ran out of time and the change was made with a helicopter.  Anything's possible these days.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear: we had to shove the train back 5 miles to the next control point, and the conductor got a ride back in the crew van and was then able to ride the DP (on the walkway) while watching the shove. Riding in the DP cab is not normally  authorized.

Wow, that is a great shot, Doug! Plus it looks like a train layout train--1 locomotive pulling lots of intermodal.

Love the D&H RS's, Lenny. Those bring back good memories from the 1970s.

Ah, that makes more sense.  You did kinda explain it, just didn't read it correctly.  Thanks, Pedro.

I’ll do a two-fer this week. Here is “something blue” for the Conrail Collective. Location is my hometown of Mason, Michigan on the former MC line from Jackson to Lansing. At one time this line went to Saginaw/Bay City, but by the time of this 1993 photo, it had been cut back to Lansing. Traffic was predominantly auto-related for Oldsmobile and other GM concerns, with a fair amount of local traffic thrown in, as seen here with CR 8065 switching the Mason Co-op elevator on the nice cut-stone bridge over Sycamore Creek.

This line survived NS and today is thriving under shortline Adrian and Blissfield, despite the departure of almost all auto-related traffic.

This is a below-average scan from the print. Gotta get those negatives scanned! One of these days…

Caught something out of the ordinary last week. The old auto parts car was cool to see.

Stumbled across this yesterday on our drive up to our cabin, south of Quincy. Had no idea any still existed, but there is was, working a cut. Apparently the Burlington Junction has the last three in operation.

For those of us who are too lazy or just don't have the time to click on a thumbnail , what type of locomotive is that, @C855B?
