How does one receive a negative 'respect' anyway?

Model a concentration camp and you will get a negative rating.

Somewhere in the past it was stated why there is no longer a totalizer in our profile, stating the number of positive and negative post.

The railwire forum is like all other online forums a bunch of anonymous stranger typing on a keyboard.  Communicating with forum members lacks the  purpose and connection of say, a prison pen pal.  Yet some people seek validation from a bunch of anonymous strangers.

There is at least one member who has posts in the thousands and has an even higher respect score.  He hasn't posted since 2021, which is a shame because he post beautiful work. Unlike this poster.

Over the years we had several heated discussions about this, and about the respect rating itself (which as I see it has nothing to do with respect), but it is unlikely that anything will change in regards to how this system is implemented here.

I frequent another forum where members have a choice of giving multiple types of votes in a post. At first only the types of ratings and the counts for each were shown (they were anonymous), but after some lobbying by the users, the admins enabled showing which members actually left which votes.  It is much better to see which member gave which vote.

I’d downvote a couple posts in this thread.

I upvoted to cancel out Bryan's downvote.  Net Zero.

I am sure the reason the voting system won’t go away has to do with some high stakes model railroading gambling!  Rare Microtrains limited edition cars, jars of original factory air from tours of the line, and the ever elusive Con-Cor runs of foobie paint scheme locos.

I'll toss my contrarian view grenade into this once- anything I perceive as personal attacks or offensive comments unnecessary and not in context or jest, I'll throw down.
Just to represent the dissatisfaction I often feel is pervasive in online society, or lack of it.
And its negative...
