I got my record collection off of my desk so I have room for modeling again

What would the vinyl world do if the Kallax went away?

Nice looking patch job Ed, I've always liked CR patches, lots of colors.
Made a few for a buddy of mine several years ago as he decided to model early CR.

Here's a few I did up for him
Now get that beast weathered!

Oh man, those are SEXY! They'd look right at home in that engine terminal you just did too.
I wish I had a reason for one of those C420s to show up but they didn't roam far from Bethlehem from what I had seen.
That doesn't mean I won't do one if I find a good deal on one, but it'd likely be living in the "todo" box for quite a while.

Patch jobs really ARE fun, and are a large part of the reason I've revised my era to be "early Conrail" instead of 12/17/1985.

Weathering should be this week.

The Mr Surfacer people make a flat clearcoat that works well.

Nice! I see it comes in a rattle can too. Where do you get yours from?

Rattle can or airbrush @Ed Kapuscinski ?  I have found that airbrushing XF86 gives somewhat of a satin finish.  Adding a few drops of XF21 "flat base" helps, but too much can cause a dusty/frosty look.

Dullcote sure is the gold standard, but definitely not basement-friendly  :o

  Frank

Ideally rattle can. I've got the airbrush, but I love the convenience of just being able to shake, rattle and go into the garage for a quick spray without having to setup and clean up.

I really miss Dull-Cote.

Ed K,

Here is a recent mess job of mine that has been dull coated. I have not tested to see if it turns white as the old "Dull-Cote" does.

this is the spray that I used. It was a bit expensive so I use it sparingly. I think that I got it off of Amazon.

this stuff worked better than anything else that I have tried.

Be well,
Carl

Late to the weekend party, but I printed something I have needed for some time. My old Atlas/RR 0-4-0 boxes were fine but the nests were kaput. I suspect may are in the same boat.  So I whipped up a cad model of a replacement nest and printed the two I needed. Made some improvements over the original nest for fitment and such.

Really I wanted these to have a new nest, especially after @mmagliaro rebuilt the motors for them, not,to mention my sentimental attachment to these little guys.

Here they are in their new home:

Thinking of offering them on the Keystone Details website if anyone wants me to print and mail. I will also sell the stl file for those with printers. Price for either TBD.

I really miss Dullcote, too.  I used that Krylon Flat Crystal Clear on my SAL station project.  Similar to Ed's complaint about Tamiya Flat Clear, I wish the Krylon was a flatter finish, too.

It looks like you need to print a new stack too.  ;)

By Sunday night my CR 3278 project is coming along.

I have to say that I am not impressed with Tamiya Flat Clear as a Dullcote replacement. It's not nearly as "flat" as it claims.

I find myself soaking the model for the initial coat, like Dullcote, but then misting on a final coat, from farther away, to change the surface finish a bit.  The Tamiya cans atomize really well, so it's just speckling the surface enough to make it look less perfect.

Amazon.  Stocked up along with the various surfacers and finishers.  The manufacturer's website has all the products listed, including a large variety of clear top coats.  Flat, Gloss, semi-gloss, UV-cut, etc.

After spraying a couple of models with Tamiya flat I happened to notice that on the cap it states “ do not use on decals or stickers “. While I had no issues arise that still kind of made me cringe a bit. Has anyone else ever experienced and problems using this product over decals?

Southernman:  I bought a can last month, and noticed the same warning.  Haven't opened the can, because I haven't had anything to paint that didn't have decals.
