I'm getting real Thunder Mesa vibes from this build. And I am here for it.

Dust and red dirt will be the vibe for sure. I am taking some more realistic photos from Sedona and S. Colorado for the inspiration. Very close to the small red dirt layout in the pics above.

Looks like John Olson's HOn30 mini layout.

I had no idea he had a Hon30 layout? Was it in Model Railroader? I love his work.

Yes it was on the cover. It was a mini layout built all out of high density foam. Wish the MR index still worked... Guessing sometime in the 90's.

It was a Southwestern theme. With a bunch of Flying Zoo locos and Shinohara tight turnouts. Don't forget to Model Railroader HOn30 is HOn2-1/2.

I'd love to see more about this John Olson layout. Not familiar with it. I know mule Shoe Meadows, the Mescal Lines, and the Jerome & Southwestern.

Now I'm tripping because I can't find it. I wonder if it was HOn3?  I know he cut apart turnouts and glued them to styrene to re-gauge them.

And there were at least 2 articles on building the layout.

And just for fun if you can't find it. Search for his wife "Sharon Olson" she might have wrote the article.

November 93 page 84 "Tascosa & Calico" don't know when the other articles were, but after this one. It was HOn3. He widened HOn30 turnouts.

Edit   says first article was in October.
