The Bachmann Northern is past it's use by date!

I think it was "past due" when it was originally issued.  I remember seeing one on a shelf at a hobby shop in about 1978, when I was moving from HO to N scale.  The owner of the shop knew me pretty well, and almost refused to sell it to me.  He literally convinced me not to buy it, on the grounds that it would not meet my standards.  My first steamers would end up being Atlas-Rivarossi Mike and Pacific, which was hardly a "high" standard, but in his opinion substantially better than the Bachmann.  Those indeed ran on several layouts for 25 years, and went on eBay when I committed to code 55, the Pacific for more than I had paid for it.

I'll admit to being tempted after reading Spookshow's review of the newer split frame chassis, even if the shell is still 1970s toy caliber.  It seems unlikely we'll ever see decent ATSF steam in my lifetime, as Bachmann, Kato and BLI have had many opportunities, but consistently chosen to ignore ATSF.

That said, if BLI wants to bring out a 3751 class in N scale, I am very likely to finally buy a BLI locomotive.  Also true for a 3800, a 3450 or 3460, or any class of ATSF Mikado.  Or, GTW Northerns, although that strikes me as very unlikely for anyone.

Since BLI has consistently been issuing N scale models that they previously did in HO, I think the odds are pretty good that BLI will get around to the ATSF Northern eventually.

At least the initial sales sucked on this engine in HO so even though N is an entirely different market I wouldn’t count on it...

Holy smoke!!
This goes back to my teenage years, when I installed a SEUTHE smoke unit in  one of my TT steam engines. The fond memories of the oily fluid all over the loco, and the lovely smell of the oily vapors meandering through the air.

You're right. I have two by now quite old Arnold steamers (BR 41 and BR 18) with factory installed SEUTHE smoke units. Never used them much, what a mess to fill in the oil.

I once bought an Arnold BR 18 steamer to go with their Rheingold passenger car set.
The smoke unit never worked well unless the loco was running at high speed/high track voltage, and it did leave an oily residue across the top of the loco.
The LHS from which I purchased the loco had ordered it from Walthers who, at least at that time, had a 'satisfaction guaranteed or your money back' policy, so the loco was returned for a refund.

I hope so, Mark, while no doubt some of our compatriots here would call me a "kid", I am getting to an age where "eventually" does not make me very optimistic that I will ever have one.

Charlie, which engine do you mean by "this"- the Santa Fe Northern, or the Milwaukee Northern?  Not that I wish any ill will on the Milwaukee modelers, but hoping the ATSF sales were pretty good.

"Smoke units" - please NO!!!

Those things never produced "smoke" that looked realistic anyway.  My grandfather produced more convincing smoke clouds with his cigarettes.

But, having to sit near the club's O scale layout to run its N scale layout during our open house events, I have already inhaled more than a lifetime's total dose of whatever those smoke units emit. 

Why aren't these things put in the same category as "vaping" and prohibited indoors?

Charlie was referring to the Milwaukee S3 northern.

Yes, I was referencing the Milwaukee Road engine.   As a current fan trip locomotive it should have sold better....but then , it isn’t a Big Boy or GG1.   
Two important widely used prototypes still need to be done well..the USRA 0-6-0 and Heavy 2-10-2.   
Both have been done poorly...the train set Bachmann switcher and the Con-Cor 2-10-2 which was an inexplicably over stretch-distorted copy of the Kato Mikado.
The 0-6-0 especially has some solid popular road originals and clones.

Well shoot. With just $50 difference in MSRP between the Kato and BLI one, I'm not sure which to go for.

Given the extra lighting functions, as well as smoke(??), the BLI one seems more impressive. I have two T-1's, and they're both superb. Of course so is the FEF and GS-4...
