Will Naptha harm plastic

Hey all.

I need a container to hold a about 8L of Naptha. I was thinking of using a rubber made container or a trash can. Will the Naptha eat the plastic?

I use Naphtha all the time on most plastics.  The only negative effect I noticed is that after some rubbing, it slightly fogged clear polystyrene.  But is it safe for all the slippery engineering plastics.  Ronsonol Lighter Fluid (Naphtha) comes in a plastic container.

Rubbermaid flexible containers are usually made from #5, or 1 or 2 plastics which should be safe with Naphtha.  Check the recycling symbol.  Whatever container you use, make sure it can be closed tight as Naphtha will evaporate.  And vapors are flammable.

My Rubbermaid bin is a #4, LDPE. Any thoughts?

For little parts, try one of the little glass baby food jars - you can see what's going on, wide lid, good seal, and holds a relatively small amount.  That's what I use to clean small Shapeways parts.

Craig:  I think #4 plastic (low density Polyethylene) is safe to use with Naphtha, but I don't think I ever used it personally.

I would go for a 2 gallon glass jar with a lid that be sealed or you could place an air tight membrane.  The tub your thinking of would most likely lost the Naptha to evaporation and a little to leaching?

Why not buy the most available container for a volatile chemical. Gasoline containers are available in a variety of sizes and would most likely be the safest means of storage.

I would be hesitant to put 2 gallons of gasoline in a glass jar.  Drop it and you would need to evacuate the premises pronto, and may not have any premises to return to if something ignites the vapors.

I just went out to the shed and checked the commercially sold gas container for my lawnmower gas.  It is #2 HDPE.

Where does everybody get Naptha?  Brandnames?

My local ACE Hardware store has it in cans in the solvents section, labeled "naptha".  I think the brand is Kleen-Strip

That site doesn't seem to even consider HDPE, which is what the commercial plastic gas containers I have are made from.  If the low density stuff works well, I don't see any reason for there to be issues with the high density version of the same polyethylene chemical.
