What era are Atheran 28" pups?  I model 1974 and realized have two sets, but they seem too modern.

According to Athern's web site, they're 1990's era.

I'm not sure when the specific  Athearn models were introduced, but 28' by 102" pups were legalized 1982/83.

Can you point to a good reference for when various trailer sizes were legalized?

I wish I could! I've been searching for years for such a reference and at best have found bits and pieces.

Part of the problem is so much of the regulations are at the state level so there could be 50 different dates for each advancement.

One big one was the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982, it legalized in all 48 continental states;

48' trailers
102" width
28' doubles

Beyond that it gets complicated, fun subject to research tho  :D

What trucking company are the pups decorated for? I wouldn't rule them out just yet. While the move from 96"wide trailers nationwide to 102" wide trailers happened in the early 80's, the wedge design pups appeared sometime in the 1970's I believe. 6" of width in N scale is not that noticeable IMHO. Trailer height increasing to 13'6" also occurred in the early 70's.  Pups were used more out west in that time frame vs over here on the east side so geography matters. I've seen photos of CF from the 1970's with doubles of rib sided wedge trailers with the red C and green F logo on the traders side. I do find it interesting Athearn says 1990+ for these as several of the lines that Athearn put on their trailers were out of business by 1990.  It's times like these I miss Hank's Truck Pictures.

"The Model Railroader's Guide to Intermodal Equipment & Operations" by Jeff Wilson has a info on the various trailer sizes (and other equipment used in intermodal railroading) and time frames. At least enough to be able to get real close in our modeling if you ask me.

Here's a picture of a CF box-van with a 28' trailer. Not sure of the date, but it looks like possibly the 60's... or maybe early 70's. That trailer looks similar to the Walther's model, but not exactly.

This shot, from 1995, looks closer.

That earlier shot would be a 96" wide trailer vs 102" on the later shot. I also suspect (but I can't say for sure) that it is a 26' long pup vs 28'.

Certainly you could put a modern trailer on a older era layout and still be withing the realm of plausible...
It all depends on how much you sweat the little stuff...  :D

Here what I was remembering. But I totally forgot about 26' pups. The question being like asked above are they 26' or 28' in length?

Bryan,

It all depends on how accurate you want to be.  The Athearn pups are mostly freelanced.  I have not found a prototype for the exterior post pup, and the smooth side FRP pup appears to be based on an obscure prototype that Viking Freight, and maybe a few other companies had.  When I started modeling in N scale in the late 1960s, I was delighted to convert the Atlas and Aurora 24-ft trailers that came as loads on a 50-ft flatcar to highway service as shown below.   ;)

So as others have mentioned, a 1974 appropriate paint scheme is probably more important to most modelers than the actual N scale dimensions of the trailer.

And while I don't think anyone misses Hank's Truck Pictures more than I do, I have found several books that have photos of trucks and trailers from the 1960s and 1970s.

they are based on the wedge type and that wouldn't date to the 70`s
