If that works, one of my current projects might result in a whole new body style....

But in the meantime, I'll have to study up on movements of sulfur and agricultural minerals, to figure out if/how many I can justify in addition to a few to carry coal from this announcement.  To add to the 20-odd I already have, mostly C&EI.

For @Bluford Craig and others who might be interested, there is a photo of several ATSF war emergency hoppers in sulfur service on p.235 of the Richard Henderson book "Santa Fe Open Top Cars" and the book describes these hoppers as in frequent sulfur service.  The load is rather smaller than what is indicated in the artwork, and a couple feet below the top. (not a deal breaker, been doing my own hopper loads since 1968 or so).

The CB&Q cars lasted into the mid 70s, with many working out their last years in sugar beet service in Washington.  Quite a few were not in good condition, with broken or missing boards, and holes patched with anything from sheet metal, to cardboard, to bundles of straw stuffed in the hole.

The end came quickly, after the bottom fell out of one, dumping the load of beets on the mainline, at track speed, west of Kennewick.  Made quite a mess, as the trailing cars (mixed merchandise) piled up.

rob@dcctrain.com ( Rob Gruber aka @iccn1000 ) is where I will pre-order mine.  Just send an email telling what ones you want and ask for his price.  It will be competitive with MBK. Shipping he generally charges a flat $10 for USPS Priority.  If you order more than fit in a Medium box it may be more. But might not be.

95% of my pre-orders have been through him for the last 8 or 9 years so he's my go-to.  Used to be brick and mortar but now are just online so there are some limitations but Atlas, BLI, Bachman, Bluford, and others are good.  As far as I know only Micro-Trains they don't have because they didn't do enough business and cancelled their dealer status.

Yes, we have that Santa Fe book as well. Sulfur is definitely more dense than coal. Our loads have risers on the ends to hold the load at the coal level. If you trim those off, you can push the load further down in the car which would be appropriate for the Santa Fe and probably the Atlantic Coast Line cars as well.

Thanks Craig.  It should have occurred to me to pull out and examine one of the loads on the cars I have.  Very easy to adjust. Now I have another excuse to buy more hoppers.
