Silver Swift Reefers

I've been reviewing the collection and realized I have two different 50' Silver Swifts Premium reefers (one Bachmann and one Atlas) that I've accumulated over the years.

Finding proto photos has been tough.

Anyone have a good source or info on these cars?

Probably right about that.

There is an article about Swift in the Feb 1993 RMJ, but it does not cover any series as low as "4"  :D

The inside length is 35’2” according to the photo, so probably a 40’ mechanical reefer.

The mechanical reefers have characteristics of being rebuilds, like they're the product of combining two 40' or smaller cars.  The majority of the body is rivetted and the areas around the door seem like a wholly different construction approach, and those ends and the car height seem a little pre-mech reefer era (no historical treatises on reefer design, please).

I picked up a bunch of shells to see if I could get a Rath 50' car from them.

Th 40' mechanicals have been on my wish list for a long time.  Someday I hope to get out the the Lakeshore Museum and get measurements and photos.

They took forty foot cars and spliced another 20' into the middle to make 60' cars (see the RMJ article I linked to above).
