Did you tape the seams before you mudded them?  If not it may happen again.  It's looking good though, looking forward to seeing this come together.

Scott

No I didn't, first time ever doing masonite panels in tandem like this. Thanks, might work with more screws (countersunk) and re applied. I have a couple of bumps that didn't get sanded down completely. Need to check seams next visit and then sand down bumps and repaint and apply cloud stencil.

You definitely need tape at the seams before using joint compound.  Better yet, use the mesh type.  Think reinforced concrete.

I am going back in....I was following this and must have been asleep when he mentioned expansion and contraction of the seams. Thanks for the reminder. He is using paper and not mesh.

I like the fiberglass mesh tape as opposed to paper drywall tape, but it's totally personal preference.  Whatever you choose, do not forego it, as you will be chasing those cracks for the rest of your backdrop's life.  Drywall compound is not flexible, and it will crack.  The panels of Masonite will move with expansion and contraction of your home during seasonal changes of humidity and temperature.

Good luck!

Hats other than the seams, how do you like where it's going?

I'm on it...Redoing the 4 seams next month. What Scott posted:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Saint-Gobain-ADFORS-FibaTape-Veneer-Plaster-2-3-8-in-x-300-ft-Self-Adhesive-Mesh-Drywall-Joint-Tape-FDW8653-U/100243295

How do you sand over the mesh?

The mesh goes on before the joint compound.  You should not sand the joint compound down enough to expose the mesh, or it will show even through paint.  If that happens, apply another thin coat of joint compound.  Ask me how I know.

The mesh is self adhesive.
Cover the seam, mud, sand, repeat (except the mesh part)

Drywall has indentation along the long edges to allow tape and mud to be at wall surface height. Makes mudding easy. Masonite has no such indentation. So you have to build a slight hump where the tape is located. Flare out the hump to each side with mud. The wider and more tapered your flare is the less noticeable it will be. Masonite also needs a lot more screws in the field than does drywall. Otherwise, you can see small ripples in the final product.
