A few weeks ago Brasstrains had a 12 hour flash sale. I had been looking at a Key 2-6-6-2 H-5 decorated “U.S.” for a little while. Same as the C&O one, just decorated differently. The flash sale was 15% off and I couldn’t resist.

I briefly thought about replacing the U.S. marked brass tender with a Bachmann Spectrum long tender. It would already be correctly decorated and have better pickup. But that would violate the brass spirit. So I decided to use the original brass tender with Bachmann trucks.

Usually  on a plastic model I can scrape off the surface markings with a blade. The tender had a very thick white U.S. marking and a thin coat of black. Scraping the marking exposed the brass color. Fortunately Mr. Al ox blaster was in the house:




Ultrasonic cleaner is next.

This past week (or two), I decided to add another alternative era to my layout for variety's sake.  By moving into 1988-92 (my college years), I get to add CSX and the Aberdeen, Carolina & Western Ry. to the layout as successor railroads:



I expect that every few weeks I'll swap out the power and rolling stock, where necessary, and move through four different eras: Early 1960s, Early 1970s, Early 1980s, and Early 1990s.  To really pull this off, I will need to find different automobiles to repopulate the layout in addition to rolling stock.  For now, I'm not too worried about the anachronisms, and I'm enjoying JFRTM.

I had plans on my previous layout (CPR in the Rockies) circa 1958 to add a branch line (the Windemere subdivision) set ten years previously. I wasn’t too concerned about potential anachronisms and it would allow me to operate my beloved Canadian on the main, and steam powered mixed trains on the Windemere. In ‘48 the Windemere was a backwater; now it hosts dozens of unit coal trains on their way to tidewater with coal for Japan.

I have back-of-my-mind plans to try again on the current layout and I’ve included the junction at Golden in the track plan…

Mostly JFRTM for me this week but I have taken advantage of summer’s slower pace to dig out an old project - a VO660. This shell is ancient, one of my first shapeways attempts! Probably 6-7 years old, and goes on a Bachman NW2 mechanism. It’s got some warts for sure, and the work that I had previously done is not up to the standard of the RS2s and FA2 I completed earlier this spring. Still, it’s fun to mess with, though I may end up starting fresh with a shell out of the photon.

Ahh the joys of multi-era modelling! I just don’t know how people can stick with one. I’m wondering if the buildings/industries maintained a relatively consistent look through the years. My problem I have with the multi-era approach is that the coal industry in the 50’s looked much different than the 90’s.

My layout returned to full operational status this week with Op Session 23 held last night.  This was the first since October and will be the penultimate session in this location.

The final VP freight arrived in Chetwynd with my newly finished twin trailer flatcars at the head end:




RS-3 567 is seen pulling cars from the Northwest Wood preservers  mill at Dawson Creek:




In view of the present heat wave, a water train was run to re-stock water barrels on bridges and top up the town supply at Dawson Creek:




RS-18 607 is pulling two 71' bulkhead flatcars from the Canfor mill at Chetwynd, carrying their first revenue loads of lumber:




The westbound Dawson Creek Switcher comprised 18 cars and van:




The southbound Peace-Vancouver freight totaled 35 cars and van, powered by M-630 717, CN C-424 3218 and M-630 708:

Also some progress on various projects this past week before shutting down my workbench for the move.

Two twin trailer flatcars received their weathering and final seal coat, and entered service (more here:  https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=21968.165




Snow plow BCOL 996006 is now painted and ready for decals:






I stained some ties and bundled them around lead weights for Tie and Truck Car:




For flanger BCOL 996016, I got the 3D printed roof and cupola sanded and fitted:




Then I added most of the detail parts.  Underneath we see brake appliances, archbar trucks and couplers (plows yet to be added):




The ends and sides received grab irons, hand holds, ladders and brake equipment:
