Nightmare, how did you manage to bag these? It's been a couple days and still no sign of them at my favorite pushers...or anywhere else, for that matter.

He was a Kato USA employee who did those custom Kobo ESU decoder installs. I believe he was also instrumental in this decoder's development, so I guess there are special perks that come with that.  :D

Thats about right.

I still do install work of Kato stuff...just not for Kato anymore.

A good chunk of these are getting installed in units for Lombard Hobbies.

I'm actually impressed at how well these go in.

Enjoy!

Good to know, thanks! Maybe they've finally moved one step above unicorn sighting status. ;)

A quick video showing the install of this board in a Kato flat radiator SD70M.

The install is identical for the ES44AC (same frames).

Anywhoo...have a fantastic day!

I have a question for Kelley or any one else who can answer. I have a KATO SD-90/43 that was in the SLRG livery and I would like to add the new 78421 decoder into. I can not find any mention of that decoder fitting the SD-90, however I looked at the KATO parts and the same chassis part # is shown for the 80 & 90.  Am I safe in assuming that the 58741 will fit the SD-90 chassis? ?

thanks,
Carl

Not without milling part of the frame. Here is a picture of an SD90MAC chassis on the bottom, and a 70MAC on the top.

On the 90MAC, there is material right next to the front LED that will need to be removed in order to make room for the front portion of the decoder. Quite honestly, not a huge problem with a Dremel, or even a file and some patience. A mill would be better (which is what I am planning on using).

Thanks for the info Ghillieman. That 90 chassis sure is longer. Had no idea.

That is odd if both chassis have the same part number.

Pete,

Not so strange. My question was between the SD-80 & SD-90, not the SD-70. I just double checked the KATO parts and the SD-80 & 90 show chassis part # 925130. As info the SD-70 does not have that part # and it shows to fit the 44 series as wellas the SD-70.

So I still don't have an answer.

The 58741 fits the SD70MAC/ES44, SD70M, SD70ACe, and the SD40-2 chassis IIRC. The 58741 does not fit into the 80/90MAC chassis without minor modifications as noted above. And yes, the 80MAC and the 90MAC share the same chassis/internals. Only difference is cosmetic to match either prototype.

There is enough space in the SD80/90 that I'm pretty sure you could fit a V5 wired micro in.

The SD80/90 use a common frame and the board layout is unique to it and the RS/RSC2.

I'll find out in a week or two as I have several to do here.

Putting that aside...

Quick down and dirty video of the SD40-2 mid with the 58741 board installed.

SD70ACe's should be up next, but it's extremely similar to the SD40-2 mid for installs.  Give it a few days.

Enjoy!

Kelley.
