I replied to their email with this.

...But a boxcar that looks like something I bought at Kiddie City back in 1983? You're on the wrong track....

I don't know if it'll make any difference, but at least it didn't bounce back.

I think I bought my last Bachmann freight car at Toys-R-Us in the late 1970s- and never had very many. Almost bought a flat car a few years ago, then realized the stake pockets were sized for 10x10 posts.

In their defense, on their old-timer boxcars (from the '70s) the board gaps are smaller than on the Rapido meat reefers.  There, I said it!    :D

Toys-R-Us and Child World - couple of fun toy stores (at least in my area) that are no longer there.  I used to buy Model Power and Life-Like stuff there too. Then there was KB-Toys - another fallen store.  Ah, the memories . . .

Looks like the Bachmann roof grafted onto the MTL body would yield the basis for an accurate ATSF model, provided both models are in scale to the prototype.

The Northeastern caboose, USRA twin hopper, and the two 8k gallon tank cars are top notch.  The outside post trailer on the TOFC is decent also even though the flatcar is horrible.  So they do make some rolling stock gems here and there, but definitely its not a given.  And they always get dumped to market at some point, which is the best time to pick up the decent models.  They must be making money in the overseas markets because they continue to follow this business method.

Thank you Ed for letting Bachmann know what many of us were thinking.  I guess it would make more impact if we all contacted Bachmann with our sentiment, but I suspect that it wouldn't make a difference.

You'd still need to replace the PS ends and doors on the MTL model.   On the subject of MTL, the door from their 104000 series 60' car might be a good choice since it is a separate part.

The plug door car would be the easiest option for the ATSF (Transco), CNW (Maxson), or UP (home-built) cars with the sliding doors.

Would the Bachmann roof fix the MTL car for the BN/NP/CBQ and CNW versions? And does the MTL match a prototype as it is?

Your link does not point to the JPG.  I went to the link from you then rigth-clicked and selected "View Image", then got the direct link to the photo.

Thanks for the mini-review.  I'll take a look at the tank cars (which I assume are the ones Bachmann lists as 10k and 3-dome on their website?) if I find them on sale somewhere in road names I can use.  On hoppers, Bluford keeps bringing out styles (including USRA) and roadnames on my wishlist, so I am pretty committed to those (not to mention very happy with the level of detail on the Bluford models).

Here is a Bachmann 10,000 gal tank fitted to an intermountain underframe. They are still overpriced but since Bachmann only does one number it's not a huge deal. I do not like the Bachmann underframe so I bought a BUNCH of Intermountain frames several years ago. The three dome Bachmann car is very good looking as well, I have a dozen or so of those.

I still watch for the Bachmann tank cars, they did change the numbers on this Spartan car so as far as I know there are two numbers for this car. The prototype had four numbers. I also have about a dozen of the Simonins cars that I renumbered.

I agree the Bachmann car is nice.

Sorry, they are 10k gallon tanks, not 8k.

Yes the Bluford USRA is top-notch. But the Bachmann was released a few years before and is equally good, other than modifying the coupler pocket to accept better couplers. It also has the cross-bracing for the sides, which looks cool in empty cars. I believe the Atlas twin offset is the only other N scale hopper model that includes the cross bracing.

You can see the cross bracing in the photo of this Pennsy GLd I made before the BLMA model was announced and before Bachmann released their (sketchy) PRR version.
