Old Floquil Colors

In an interesting loop around the world of miniatures... this company is reissuing Floquil colors as "Star Wars" miniature colors.

I had a laugh when Adam Savage was building a rack for paint and kept saying Reefer Yellow, et al.

Wow, that is really good news that someone is making the old Floquil enamels.  I love using them on steam locomotive painting projects, they just work better than acrylics in my experience.

They are acrylic paints. And pricy. Sounds like they are reproducing the Floquil colours in a new formulation (acrylic). Savage refers to “Floquil”, and mutters about “Lark light grey” and “reefer white” etc through the video.

They have both acrylics and enamels, though I think the acrylic range has more colors.

No, not original formula.   The claim is that they have matched the original colors.

IIRC, the solvent mix in both the original and reformulated Floquil is illegal in a lot of jurisdictions. It exceeds VOC limits for a consumer product.

Now what somebody needs to do is find a fragrance chemist who can copy the characteristic Floquil aroma and make it compatible with current paint mixes. MRRs everywhere would be lining up at the door.

The company is researching and releasing the 1975 era Floquil railroad colors, as those are what Industrial Light and Magic used to paint the practical miniatures for Star Wars movies.  New enamel and acrylic base, but the old Floquil colors. 

I think that's pretty cool.  And hoping for a US distributor at some point to help with the pricing... as noted.

Cool? Yes, but Like C855B mentioned, it will not have that sweet Floquil aroma. Mmmmmmm!  It was nice.
I still have bunch of bottles left. Not sure if they are any good though.  Well, silver and black are still ok- I used them recently.  But I have some other colors going back to the '80s.

Mike:  Interesting that a movie studio, not noted for being short on money, found old-school model railroad paint to be the best for their models.  Floquil was good paint.  And, having the colors available again, if the price was a little more reasonable, would be nice.

I can do without the odor.  Spray painting outdoors isn't a problem.  But, as a teen, I had to brush paint outdoors, as no one else in the family could stand the smell!

Off topic, but still Floquil:  I have a bunch of their paint, most still good, that I haven't used for years.  But I have no thinner for it.  What do those of you with similar stashes thin it with?  I assume acetone will work for cleaning brushes, as it removes almost anything, but I need actual thinner.
