JMRI USB interface with NCE Power Cab
« on: April 21, 2021, 02:49:27 PM »

This is a new post regarding a post I made on 02/21/2021. RailWire noted to me I should open a new one.
So here goes.  This is going to be a long post.
I really need help with this, has you can see by the date of my first post I have been dealing with this for a long time.
I can open JMRI on my computer but when I try to do a new loco I get the green service line at the bottom of the screen.
This only stays on for about 10 seconds then goes to RED.
Here is what  equipment I am running:  a acer laptop running Windows 10, NCE Power Cab. USB interface from NCE.
I have tried to change every thing-new USB adaptor. Three different computers. New cables-different throttle.
Each and every change was restarted per JMRI information. Same on the Cab side.
I even took this equipment to a computer repair shop. Two tech’s worked with me on this for about two hours.
All resulting in NO CHANGE!
Help from any one,  I am really frustrated and don’t know where to turn.
Thanks in advance.

That warning can be safely ignored (if your new post is really a good fit to add to the old thread). The warning is there for the newbies not to carelessly bring back old dead threads without a good reason.

Try disconnecting all of the jumpers on the board. It adjusts the data rate or something. I couldn't get my NCE USB interface to work with JMRI until I did this. (Of course, note which pins a jumpered first.)
The fabric of reality has begun to fray.

Take a look at this.
https://sites.google.com/site/mgurriesncedcc/home/nce-usb-adapter
I had issues with mismatched set up in JMRI and the usb baud rate in the past which was my problem.
Here is another link that might be helpful too.

Thanks CR4100- I have changed the jumpers to the way the NCE instructions told me to- that did not work so I did like you said still does not work. I have been struggling with this for over  4 weeks now and no matter what I have tried it does not work.
I have checked the ports/reset the ports I have plugged and un plugged cables and throttles ‘tried a new USB all resulting in it not working- very frustrating - this is a tool I use all the time, well not lately.

Have you tried asking for help on the NCE groups.io list.  They routinely help with issues like this one.  Usually successfully.  It gets very detailed - they will be asking you to post logs from JMRI and trouble shoot for you.

If you are not already a member, sign-up with Groups.io, then join NCE-DCC group and ask your question there.

Had not seen that first link so I go back to it to see if I can make a change- I am thinking I have 64 bit computers?
Not sure how to check that?

Well I wasted some more time trying to get JMRI to work. NO GO! At one point I was able to open Decoder Pro and have the service line stay green- but on the top of page there was a amber box saying UNKNOWN—click to turn off well with a bunch of fiddling around I finally got a green in the square telling me it was ON.  GREAT- tried to read the decoder, program status timed out gave me an error cod of 306- I know the connection to loco is good because I see the power LED on. And with the PC I can operate the loco- even tried a non-sound bare bones two function decoder in a different loco. Same results. After reading info for the 306 code , Used my IPad for that.
I tried again to open decoder-pro- came up green service line at bottom- BUT after 10 seconds it went to RED.
I AM done-wasted time.
Thanks for all the input.

Jerry, did you try asking for help on https://groups.io/g/NCE-DCC ?  There are almost 6,000 members there just itching to help you out. That is more than probably about a dozen of NCE-aware members here.

And for JMRI help, there is https://groups.io/g/jmriusers with over 8.400 users. Plenty of people there to assist.

Jerry,

have you deleted your current (corrupted ?) version of JMNRI from your computer and then downloaded the most current version. To me that would be like a fresh startup. Nothing else has worked, just maybe.......

Be well,

Pete, have not joined that one, I did sign up in the JMRIuser group. So far it has been a lesson in a new format to me. Very steep learning curve to me.
Carl, I have installed & uninstalled JMRIso many times I lost count.
The one thing I have come up with is the sequence which you load your computer.  AND if you have the USB interface powered up or not.

I just found this in my saved stuff.

https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:nCQEjAnJ4WAJ:https://ncedcc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001995503-USB-Interface-Read-Me-First+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

You may already be aware of the gem in this about removing any JMRI installed completely before installing the usb interface.
But just in case not, I thought it might be helpful.

I know you are frustrated, I have been too, and wrote down the steps I had to go through.

If you go step by step, you can get there...

Try my sequence, and also I'd be happy to help you by email too.

https://elmassian.com/index.php/dcc/specific-manufacturers/nce-equipment/nce-usb-serial-jmri-interfaces

I did learn recently that my 2 USB interfaces are different versions, but they both work fine with JMRI and on 2 different computers.
