Kato C57 Question

Does anyone here own a Kato C57?

If so could you please measure the distance between the two red lines in this photo?

The reason I ask, is for an early 1910s Pacific that I am (slowly) trying to model, and it has spoked wheels.

Thanks!

Mark

I'm still not entirely sure if I have a C57 or a C62, and it definitely does not have spoked wheels.

Nonetheless, I get 0.585 inches

European companies (Fleischmann, Minitrix, Arnold, etc.) sell replacement parts and they have spoked wheels available as spare parts.  I usually order my spares through DM-Toys in Germany.

Hi Mark (W),

Thanks - the photo is from the 4th edition C57. Some versions of the C57 didn't have spoked wheels there (no idea which versions).

@Mark W The C62 is a much heavier loco than the C57 (larger boiler, etc): https://www.gaugemasterretail.com/magento/kato-k2017-6.html

Peteski,

If the dimensions are good, I think it would be much simpler to adopt the Kato assembly (as opposed to fabricating something to use with monster euro flange wheelsets ).

Hoping someone has a confirmed C57.  :D If the dimensions are close enough, I can order the part.

Thanks!

Mark

Can you share the original image you cropped that from? We can figure it out using the known dimension of the height of the Unitrack rail, but I want to make sure I can see the base of the rail for an accurate measurement.

It's how I figured out the dimensions of the Hanover Junction station using "Lincolns" as my unit of measurement.

Good thinking Ed, I just figured some of the Kato fanboys here must have one.  :D If all else fails I'll estimate using the "scaling" method.

Yes, the European wheels have deep flanges.

I have Kato Japanese stem loco, but it is a D51, so I can't help you there.  Assuming that the C57 will suit your needs, will spare parts be available?

Only if the image is already proportionally stable, we have no idea if the image was ever stretched horizontally.  A true measurement would be best.

I'm sure the Kato loco is sitting on Kato track. Measure the spike spacing.  ;)

I own a C57, but do not own a caliper. However, I also own a C62, and thought, "what if the spacing is the same?" It is, C57 top, C62 bottom:

So, the dimensions from @Mark W for the C62 are accurate to the C57 as well. If you would prefer, I can get exact measurements on Friday, where I will be somewhere with a caliper that I can use.

Also, since it was brought up, here is a side-by-side of the dedicated express-passenger C57 (left), and the rebuilt from D52 class heavy freight Mikado C62 (right).

Glad to be of service! Very rarely do I get the chance to talk about my favorite Japanese steam locomotive class, glad it was able to help out!

The C57 front truck scales out a few inches longer than the one it will replace - it will be tight but I hope I can make it work.

Part ordered! (C57 front "bogie"). It is supposed to be available this summer in Japan so I might have it by fall.

Thanks again!
