SD90MAC Dilemma
« on: March 20, 2021, 03:26:49 PM »

A day full of coincidence. I just received an SD90 from a great trainboard member. I had intended to use the mechanism to build a Milwaukee Little Joe electric. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Here I am operating a test trip as engineer...

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Here's my random donor SD90 MAC . What are the chances ? I am not sure I want to tear this engine apart now...

I worked for many different railroads but I don't have models of any of them except the Milwaukee Road and my chosen time period is long before I was born.

So yeah, should I change and save this engine ?

This is NOT the only coincidence today...
Randy

Yesterday I asked @peteski if he could help me with some decals for an interurban project I'm doing. He said he was too busy to take on another project but he sent me to another fellow he knows from an ALPS printer group.

Originally I am from Southeast Wisconsin, I moved to New England about 13 years ago to follow a railroad job in Maine. Turns out this fellow is from Waukesha Wisconsin AND is quite familiar with the equipment I want to model. [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Coincidence number two...

Repaint the SD90MAC into a MILW tribute/heritage paint scheme.

Repaint the SD90MAC into a MILW tribute/heritage paint scheme.

It will become a little Joe electric as originally planned....

Change the number and keep it. First engine I ever ran was a SSW GP60. When FVM came out with their model, I bought one and changed the number to match the one I ran. It's a neat little reminder.

Nevermind the dyslexic numbers part, even if it was the same number, the proto pic and the Kato model are two different versions of SD90s.

The Kato is a SD90MAC (railfan SD90/43MAC) and the 8542 is a SD90MAC-H which had the 4-stroke 6,000HP EMD 265H prime mover in it.

If that also helps you feel better about just using the mechanism afterall.

Attempting to model a modern Southern Pacific based in 2015/2016...

Also, I have a passenger train addiction...

You are quite correct. I did look at the roof this afternoon and it is not the dual turbo H engine.

8542 is one of the Phase 2 SD90MAC-Hs, with the different cab, hood and frame. Not really close to the Kato model aside from length...
