Silver CSX coalporters??

Were silver CSX coalporters really that common? I recently saw a CSX coal train: grey & yellows, black, and some patched Conrails. But I don't recall silver? Is it just me? How common are/were they?

Gray with solid black lettering?.. or Gray with Yellow outline lettering?

Gray/Yellow maybe were silver back in the day..

I wasn't able to find a photo of a brand new car, but here is a number series that "could" have been silver/chrome to start.  They got dirty very quick

Actually the models I have are from the next number series up. Still, the point is "mute". They did indeed get very dirty. So much so that they appeared grey or even black. WOW Thanks for educating me.

"Silver" coal cars are bare aluminum and as shown tend to oxidize to brown.
Not sure where the athearn chrome comes from, even brand new they weren't that bright.

The cars in that link were all Ex B&O... so were those conversions kits on steel cars?

I wouldnt think they had B&O aluminum coalgons..

Rebuilds of steel hoppers, I imagine only the center frame is original.

To answer the original question not very... 300 cars in the 379700-379999 series vs 9500 cars in the black scheme and 3800 cars in confederate grey.
